LEGO Hidden Side is a Lego theme introduced in 2019.[1] It takes place in the fictional city of "Newbury" and links the manufacturer's play sets to an app of the same name (for iOs and Android), which is used to hunt, capture and collect ghosts according to the principle of "augmented reality". The series came on the market in 2019 and, after the now discontinued Dimensions or Nexo Knights series, represents another attempt by LEGO to link digital and real game worlds.

History and background[edit]

In contrast to series like Ninjago, there is (yet) no closed universe and no closed background story about hidden side. According to advertising material that advertised the first sets, the city of Newbury was owned by a certain "Lady E." dominated, which subjugated the citizens of the city together with eight assistants. An ancestor of the main character Jack could break Lady E.'s rule. Since then, Newbury has been haunted by ghosts who take possession of both citizens and buildings and objects. The aim or main content of the series is to end the rule of the spirits or to free citizens and objects in Newbury from the spirits.

Location of the game action[edit]

The American city of Newbury is modeled in many ways on a North American coastal city. There is a shrimp restaurant and a shrimp cutter (2019) and a lighthouse (2020). However, an alligator also appears in the "Shrimp cutter" set, which speaks more for the southern states. Despite the small town appearance, there seems to be or was a subway in Newbury (set 70430). In Newbury there is also a prison (set 70435), a school (set 70425), a castle (set 70437) as well as the shrimp restaurant mentioned and of course a cemetery. All buildings contain game and functional elements as well as (sometimes several) mechanisms that turn a "normal" building into an "obsessed" building - so the school font can be transformed into the face of a ghost.

In addition, the buildings contain colored markings (partly hidden or movable) that play a role in the use of the app.

Characters[edit]

The heroes and heroines[edit]

Jack and Spencer[edit]

Jack is introduced as a "cool YouTuber" who recently moved to Newbury. He usually wears a hoodie and a baseball cap; the first issue of the magazine included a variant with a selfie stick. There are now different variations of Jack, some of which differ in the color of the figure, some only in the position of the hat. Spencer is his "ghost dog", whose story has not yet been explained.

Parker[edit]

Parker is Jack's classmate; she is described as an outsider in school; the colored (violet) hair goes well with it.

Mr. Elton / "El Fuego"[edit]

He was or is both the school caretaker, sports teacher and stuntman. It appears both in human form and in skeletal form. There are also several variants.

JB[edit]

She is Newbury's scientific authority, who discovered how to manipulate and capture the ghosts using the app, and mostly operates from her research laboratory.

The ghosts[edit]

The figures included in the set are "normal" citizens of the city. The minifigures can be transformed into "possessed" citizens by means of a second head and other supplementary stones. With the set 70437 ("Mysterious Castle") - with Nehmaar Reem and Vaughn - ghosts are also represented as individual minifigures. The ghosts shown on posters and the packaging are usually "boss ghosts" that only play a role in the app and can be caught in the app using the respective set. They have names like Anomalo, Spewer, Hr. Nibs and others

App[edit]

With the start of sales or a few days earlier, the mobile app for hidden side was available for the operating systems iOs and Android. The app has since received several updates that have increased the game options. Originally, the app could only be played in combination with a purchased set, but now the game can also be played without sets. Users can choose between the game as a ghost or as a ghost hunter. As a ghost, you are haunted by other players, a first person shooter, not unlike Newbury. As a ghost hunter you have the task of catching as many ghosts as possible. To do this, you scan a set that is supplemented by additional elements on the screen via AR. Depending on the set, different ghosts appear - including a set-dependent boss spirit - which can then be caught. Captured ghosts are collected and can be viewed in the app, including their short biographies. There are certain similarities to Pokemon; the game principle is not (yet) so mature. The relatively detailed representation of the ghost worlds also reaches the limits of the devices; the game becomes confusing on small screens

Marketing[edit]

LEGO specifies an age between 7 and 9 years for the sets, depending on the complexity of the models. In terms of content - cool students who work as YouTubers, ghosts with sometimes creepy faces and biographies - the series is aimed more at 10-12 year olds. Further references to contemporary culture speak for this.

Magazine[edit]

As with the theme worlds Ninjago, Batman, Nexo Knights, LEGO Elves and others, accompanying magazines are published in different countries, which are distributed through the press wholesaler. Each booklet comes with a figure, which can be either figures that were available in regular sets (such as Jack, but then with different clothing), or figures that were not previously available.

Others[edit]

LEGO has been criticized in a New Zealand study in recent years because of the increasing proportion of weapons in the sets.[3][4] So far, there are hardly any weapons or weapon-like objects in Hidden Side. The conflicts with the ghosts are resolved with mobile devices; the "armament" of the main characters thus correlates with that of the app users.

Unlike other series, (so far) no large fan community has formed around the hidden side. There are isolated approaches on the internet[5][6], the number of AFOLs that are turning to the hidden side seems to be quite small.
