Leila Stahl Buffett (1903 – 1996) was the wife of U.S. politician Howard Homan Buffett and mother of investor, speaker and philanthropist Warren Buffett.

Early life[edit]

Buffett was born as Leila Stahl in Nebraska, in Cuming County, to parents John Ammon Stahl (b.1867), a native of Pennsylvania and Stella F Barber (b.1873) of Nebraska. Buffett's family was from Estonia.[1][2]

Buffett grew up in West Point, Nebraska and graduated from high school when she was 16 but was unable to attend college immediately. She assisted her father at their weekly newspaper 'The Cuming County Democrat', interviewing travelers when the train stopped at their local station. Buffett, her brother and two sisters had to fend for themselves and her mother was bed ridden most of the time. After Buffett graduated from high school, she had to work three more years so she could afford tuition at the University of Nebraska (Lincoln) from where she later graduated.[3]

Personal life[edit]

Buffett met Howard Buffett at the University of Nebraska (Lincoln) whom she married in 1925 and the couple decided to settle in Howard's native city Omaha.[4][1][5] Buffett's children are Warren Buffet, Doris Buffett Bryant, and Roberta Buffett. [2][6][7] When Leila died in 1996, her daughter Doris Buffett inherited her fortune in Berkshire Hathaway stocks, which was used to create The Sunshine Foundation.[8] The Leila Stahl Buffett Genealogy Center at the John A. Stahl Library in West Point, Nebraska is named after Buffet. The center was established by the Sunshine Lady Foundation.[9]

A biography of her daughter Doris says that Buffet was an emotionally abusive mother.[10][11][12]
