Leo Mavely (born June 01, 1984) is a medical technology entrepreneur, who is the Founder and CEO of Axio Biosolutions, a venture-backed medical technology company which develops innovative medical devices based on a biomaterials-based technology platform for trauma and advanced wound care.[1] [2]

The company is the first in India to design, develop and commercialize an emergency hemostat for trauma care.[3][4] The product, Axiostat, launched in 2014, is a hemostatic dressing that stops uncontrollable bleeding within two minutes of its application.[5][6]

Early life and education

Born to Lucy and Sebastian Mavely from Irinjalakuda, Kerala, Leo’s early education was at Don Bosco School, Irinjalakuda. He was a national level basketball player and played for the Kerala State Basketball team for five consecutive years.[7]

Leo holds a Bachelor’s degree in Bioengineering from Maharshi Dayanand University and thereafter graduated from the incubator program at Nirmalabs, Nirma University.[8][9]

Awards and recognition

Career

Prior to starting Axio, Leo spent a year at Nirmalabs, Nirma University working on Project-1006 to develop an affordable and efficient hemostat for developing markets.[21][22] The project later became the foundation for setting up Axio Biosolutions.

Axio Biosolutions

Axio Biosolutions was started by Leo Mavely in 2008 to address the unmet needs in emergency bleeding and trauma. The inception of the idea dates back to when Mavely was a student and came across incidences wherein people lost their lives due to excessive bleeding in accident-related trauma.[23][24]

Axiostat received CE mark in 2013 and US FDA 510K clearance in 2018.[25][26] In 2019, the company launched MaxioCel range of advanced wound care dressing for chronic wounds.[27]

In 2011, Axio Biosolutions received its first investment from Gujarat Venture Finance Limited (GVFL).[28] [29]This was followed by Series A investment from Accel Partners and IDG Ventures India in 2015. In 2015, the company set up its headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts followed by the establishment of the corporate office in Bangalore, India and the manufacturing facility was set up in Ahmedabad, India in 2016.[30] The company bagged Series B funding from the Regents of the University of California and Ratan Tata backed UC-RNT Fund, Accel Partners and Chiratae Ventures (formerly IDG Ventures) in 2018.[31] The company raised Series B1 round of funding in January 2020 led by Omidyar Network.[32][33]
