Leung Sheung (Chinese: 梁相; born 1918 – 1978) was a Hong Kong martial artist who studied Wing Chun, and is known as the first and senior-most student of Ip Man in Hong Kong.[2][1]

Leung Sheung, along with Lok Yiu and Chu Shong Tin are considered to be the three first-generation closed-door students of Ip Man.[citation needed]

Biography

Prior to meeting Ip Man, Leung Sheung trained in many styles of kung fu including Choy Li Fut, Bak Mei, and Southern Dragon.[2] In 1950, Leung, along with Lok Yiu and Lau Ming, all members of the Kowloon Restaurant Worker's Union, were introduced to Ip Man by Lee Man.[2] As Ip Man's first Hong Kong student, Leung was the senior kung fu brother of Ip Man's other students. All of whom, including Bruce Lee, showed him high respect.

In 1956, Leung Sheung began to teach Wing Chun publicly. He was one of the few students that Ip Man encouraged to open a school and begin to teach.

There were numerous accounts from other Ip Man students regarding who was actually a student of Ip Man. There were rumors about Leung Ting self-proclaiming he was an Ip Man student. Leung Ting didn't know most of Ip Man's students, even Leung Sheung. Until some of Leung Sheung’s students and friends brought him over to have a friendly meeting. While claiming to be one of Ip Man’s students, Leung Sheung heard about this during the meeting. He stood up and played along, asking Leung Ting about his self-proclaimed status. After a quick conversation, revealing a lack of knowledge about the people he was talking to, Leung Sheung challenged Leung Ting to a fight. The fight didn't last long, ending within a minute. Finally, Leung Ting learned that the person he fought was actually Leung Sheung, Ip Man’s first student. Leung Sheung told Leung Ting to stop self-proclaiming to be an Ip Man student, otherwise he would beat him up and tell Leung Ting’s father about the situation, revealing who was actually Ip Man’s student, and not Leung Ting.[3][better source needed]
