Lex Luthor's warsuits, also referred to as the battlesuits[1][2] or powersuits[3] is a name often given to a variety of suits used by Lex Luthor in the DCU and other material.[3]

Publication history[edit]

Concept and pre-Crisis[edit]

Throughout Luthor's villainous career in the pre-Crisis continuity, he and Superman often had increasingly strange and bizarre encounters in order to keep things fresh.[4] Although the suit was designed in 1983, it's been widely said that the fundamental idea of the suit can be traced to 1963 with Superman #164, when Luthor fought a weakened Superman on the planet Lexor.[5][4] Another potential precursor to the warsuit was Luthor's iconic purple-and-green combat suit introduced in the 1974 comic Superman #282 by Elliot S. Maggin, Kurt Swan, and Kurt Schaffenberger, in which Luthor used a ray to de-age Superman to that of a young man and fought him using gadgets and weaponry found in his suit.[6]

The first warsuit, referred as the Lexorian Warsuit, after the doomed planet of Lexor, was first seen in Action Comics #544 "Luthor Unleashed" as apart of a revamp for Superman's 45th anniversary, an honor he shared with Brainiac. The suit was designed by George Pérez for the Super Powers Collection set of action figures,[6] and implemented by Cary Bates, who was tasked in its creation by Julie Schwartz.

Within its first uses in narrative, Luthor acted as a pirate and plundered goods from Lexorian spaceships in secrecy, earning him the title "The Masked Marauder". The issue ended with Lex Luthor clashing with Superman in a battle that ended up destroying the planet Lexor, killing everyone, include Luthor's wife and son, but thanks to the suit, Luthor managed to survive the explosion. The events of Action Comics #544 were directly followed up on in Superman #386-387, which followed up on the story with Luthor, now on Earth, using the suit to construct "L-Island" and to devise his revenge on Superman for killing his people and his family.

DC Rebirth[edit]

Luthor's first noteworthy suit in DC Rebirth appeared in the Path of Doom storyline. After Superman perished, Luthor himself took up the mantle of "Superman".[7] The suit was seen again in the Superwoman run, as well as the storyline, Men of Steel.

Impact and appearances in other media[edit]

The suits have often been referred to as among the most iconic aspect of the Luthor mythos[3][6], and thus, they have appeared in several appearances by Luthor in other media, such as video games, films, television series, and more.

Films[edit]

Television[edit]

The suit made its first appearance in television in the Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show episode "No Honor Among Thieves", which aired on September 22, 1984. The suit was based off the Lexorian armor as its basis, as it was the only suit designed at the time. The suit presumably has the same or similar history to the one of Earth-One, as the canon comic story "Power Beyond Price!" featured in the Super Powers comics show Lexor in its ruins.

Video games[edit]

The suit was featured in DCU Online, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe
