Lexware is a German manufacturer of standard application software headquartered in Freiburg im Breisgau. It has been a division of the Haufe Group since 1993. It operates with the focus on commercial software for the self-employed, freelancers and small and medium-sized companies.

In 1989 the company was founded by Axel Wessendorf with the name Abakus Society for Software Development for Legal and Tax Advisory Professions (German: Abakus Gesellschaft für Softwareentwicklung der rechts- und steuerberatenden Berufe von Axel Wessendorf gegründet).[1] Wessendorf sold his shares in 1997 to Rudolf Haufe Verlag. United Planet company was founded in 1998 in Freiburg.[2]
In June 2008 Lexware entered into a joint venture with the Norwegian software company Mamut.[3] After the takeover of Mamut by Visma in 2011 and a regional realignment, the joint venture and the joint company Mamut-Lexware Vertriebs GmbH was dissolved in August 2012.[4] Between 2011 and 2012 Lexware developed the online solution Lexoffice based on the crowdsourcing principle. In 2013, more than 20,000 companies were already involved.[5]
In 2014, the company launched its own card payment service, Lexware pay which was awarded the IT Innovation Prize of the Initiative Mittelstand.[6]
