Elizabeth "Lib" Peck (born May 1967)[1] is the current leader of Lambeth Council in London. She was elected in 2012 after previous leader Steve Reed was elected to Parliament in the Croydon North by-election.[2][3]
Peck lives within the Thornton Ward area, of which she is a local councillor, with her partner and two daughters.[4][5]
Early life[edit]
Peck studied Modern History and Politics at the University of Manchester, and is a women's and human rights advocate.
Peck was Director at the National Peace Council from 1990 to 1996 and then moved to become Assistant Director of Justice from 1996 to 2003.[6]
Political career[edit]
Peck was elected as a Labour councillor for the Thornton ward of the London Borough of Lambeth in 2001.
In May 2006, Peck was appointed Cabinet Member for Culture and Environment until April 2008. Peck then became the Cabinet Member for Housing, later re-structured to Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Strategic Housing until elected as Leader of the Council.[6]
As part of the Cabinet Member for Housing Role, Peck oversaw the outsourcing of the Housing Services to Lambeth's ALMO, Lambeth Living in 2008 (later brought back into the council on 26 June 2015).[7]
In 2012, she became Leader of the Council, following Steve Reed's election as Member of Parliament.[8][9]
Peck was appointed executive member for crime and public protection at London Councils in 2014.[10]
In September 2015 she halted talks between the Council and Garden Bridge Trust over the planned Garden Bridge across the Thames citing funding concerns, stating that "During a time of severe spending cuts, putting £30m of public funding towards this new bridge isn't justified."[11][12] A week later she agreed to resume talks after Transport for London placed a £10 million cap on their contribution to the project.[12][13]
