The Liberal Democrat Education Association is a group of members of the British Liberal Democrats. Membership of the group is open to any Liberal Democrat party member, and costs up to 15 pounds per year. It was launched with the purpose of promoting education within the Liberal Democrats and wider public. Their focus is providing policy support to the Liberal Democrat Education Team and Local Government Association Lib Dem Office. They also organise a number of fringe events at the twice-per-year Liberal Democrat Conference.
The group's constitution states that:
The objects of the Association shall be to promote and support the values and objects of the Liberal Democrat Party (“the Party”) in the field of Education and in particular through its members.[1]
Overview[edit]
The Liberal Democrat Education Association consists of members interested in, or with an expertise in, young people and education.
They advocate for liberal policy on education matters and work as a sounding board for the Liberal Democrats on education matters. They also appear on a variety of media outlets, advocating for Liberal Democrat Policy and providing analysis on education matters. This includes the teachers strikes where Liberal Democrats have defended the right to strike and called for a fully funded payrise for education staff.[2]
At the twice yearly Liberal Democrat Conference, the LDEA hosts a number of fringes on topics ranging from mental health in schools, to OFSTED, they work closely with education unions to ensure that there are a wide variety of education voices at the table.[3]
Policies and issues[edit]
OFSTED[edit]
The LDEA has historically supported the replacement of OFSTED with what its members regard as a more coherent schools inspectorate, recognising the need to keep school accountability with the need to make it a productive process for all stakeholders.[4]
Others[who?] take the view that, whilst OFSTED needs reform, a robust and accountable school system drives standards for the United Kingdom's young people and that the education sector should not shy away from accountability.[5]
Organisation and structure[edit]
Liberal Democrat Education Association is run by the executive that is elected by the Liberal Democrat Education Association membership annually at their AGM.[6]
The current Board comprises:
