Libtard
"Libtard" is a pejorative term used against those who are identified as liberals by their political opponents. It combines the word "liberal" with the ending "-tard”, from “retard.”[1]
It has been particularly used during and after the US presidential election of 2016, particularly by supporters of the current president, Donald Trump. According to the Los Angeles Times, it has an alt-right connotation: "The alt-right revels in the rejection of 'political correctness,' so embracing a term for a person with an intellectual disability ('retard') serves the purpose of insulting liberals".[2]
In December 2016, the Chicago Tribune published an opinion piece calling for the term to be retired.[3]
