Licefreee!
Licefreee! is the name of a drug sold as a topical nontoxic homeopathic preparation claimed to be of benefit for infestation by ectoparasites, specifically lice, in humans. The product uses sodium chloride diluted to homeopathic level X2, or 1%, in a gel.[1] The product was developed by and is manufactured by Tec Laboratories in Albany, Oregon.[2][3]
Sodium chloride (NaCl) is also commonly known as table salt. Mixing 1 part salt with 99 parts water creates a 1% sodium chloride solution. Homeopathic remedies often use the name Natrum muriaticum for sodium chloride or common table salt. These three compounds are the same.
Licefreee! gel was first marketed in 1999 as an alternative to delousing treatments that used the insecticides pyrethrum and permethrin.[4] Active ingredients include Natrum muriaticum 2X HPUS (sodium chloride, USP) for the purpose of pediculosis remedy; inactive ingredients include aminomethyl propanol, anise oil, carbomer, cocamidopropyl betaine, fragrance, PEG-6 caprylic/capric glycerides, and purified water.
Sponsorship
In 2006, Licefreee! sponsored The United States PTA's "Keeping Kids Lice Free" program to help schools comply with the American Academy of Pediatrics’ guidelines for head lice prevention and control.[5] The manufacturer supplied schools and medical professionals with educational videos on how to conduct a head lice check program as well as how to identify and treat infestations.[6]
