Lilyfield light rail station is a light rail station located on the Inner West Light Rail line, serving the Sydney suburb of Lilyfield. It is served by Sydney Light Rail L1 Dulwich Hill Line services. The stop opened on 13 August 2000 with the line's extension, becoming its terminus until 2014.
The station is located at the edge of a wide cutting, beneath the City West Link road which passes overhead, whilst Catherine Street passes over the railway just west of the platforms.[1] Lilyfield Maintenance Depot is located adjacent to it.
Prior to 1958, a tram line connecting the city centre to Lilyfield terminated on the Catherine Street bridge, next to where the station now stands. The area in front of the present-day entrance was used for the performance of safe working procedures. A crossover was located on the bridge.[2]
History
The station is situated along the former Rozelle–Darling Harbour Goods Line, which opened in 1922. To the west, a junction connected the mainline to the former Rozelle Rail Yards, which were adjacent to the station, and from which ran a branch line to Rozelle.[3][4] In January 1996, the Lilyfield to Ultimo section of the goods line closed.[5][6]
Lilyfield station opened on 13 August 2000 as the terminus of the light rail extension from Wentworth Park, the initial light rail terminus along the converted goods line.[7]
The station and its immediate surrounds were significantly redeveloped in the 2010s. A 5.6-kilometre (3.5 mi) extension of the light rail from Lilyfield to Dulwich Hill was announced in 2010, following the cessation of goods traffic the year prior.[8][9] A stabling facility for four carriages was built to the west of the stop[10] and a second platform was added for services towards Dulwich Hill. The Dulwich Hill extension opened in 2014.[11]
In 2016, following significant patronage growth on the line, Transport for NSW briefed the transport minister on ways by which service frequencies could be increased. One idea floated was to terminate some services from Central at Lilyfield.[12]
Lilyfield was intended for temporary use as a terminus in early 2022. Cracking discovered on the line's rolling stock in October the year prior had forced a cessation of services, which were replaced by buses. A limitation re-introduction of services to Lilyfield in February was to precede a full restoration to Dulwich Hill.[13] However, it was found that the eastern suburbs fleet was compatible with the line to Dulwich Hill, and so services were restored all the way in February instead.[14]

Transport links
The station is served by the 437 bus route between Five Dock and the Queen Victoria Building, and by a school bus route serving the Sydney Secondary College Leichhardt Campus.[15]
