Lim Chae-jung (Korean: 임채정; born 14 May 1941) is a South Korean politician who served as the Speaker of the 17th National Assembly from 2006 to 2008. A prominent four-term member of the National Assembly (14th, 15th, 16th, and 17th), he played a crucial role in the transition of political power as the Chairman of the Presidential Transition Committee for President Roh Moo-hyun in 2002.
Political career
Lim entered politics as a key figure in South Korea's democratization movement. He was first elected to the National Assembly in 1992 and served four consecutive terms.
In 2002, he served as the Chairman of the Presidential Transition Committee for the incoming Roh Moo-hyun administration, setting the policy agenda for the new government. He also served as the Chairman of the Uri Party in 2005.
Speaker of the National Assembly (2006–2008)
In 2006, Lim was elected as the Speaker of the 17th National Assembly. During his tenure, he is highly regarded for establishing a "Policy-centered Parliament" and for his dedication to the institutional advancement of Korean politics.
Academic degrees
Lim holds a Bachelor of Laws from Korea University. In 2008, Chonnam National University awarded him an Honorary Doctorate in Law(LL.D.) in recognition of his contribution to national stability and the development of parliamentary democracy.
