Linda Hoaglund

Linda Hoaglund is a Japan-born American filmmaker, writer, translator, and interpreter. Hoaglund is known for directing and producing documentary films about Japan and U.S.-Japan relations that make extensive use of photographs and visual art. Documentary films Hoaglund has produced include Wings of Defeat (2007) about kamikaze pilots who survived World War II, ANPO: Art X War (2010), which tells the story of Japanese resistance to U.S. military bases in Japan through the works of avant-garde artists, Things Left Behind (2012) about objects left behind by those who perished in the Hiroshima atomic bombing, and Edo Avant Garde (2019) which examines how Edo period Japanese artists helped pioneer modern art. Hoaglund has also created English subtitles for approximately 250 Japanese films.
Early life and education[edit]
Hoaglund was born in Japan to American missionary parents and attended Japanese public schools as a child. Graduating from Yale University, she worked as a television news producer in Japan before returning to the United States to work in American film production.
