Sophia Peer

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Sophia Peer is a New York-based director, writer, and editor born and raised in Flushing, Queens.[1] She received her B.A. from SUNY Purchase and her M.F.A. in Film/Video from the School of Visual Arts, New York.[2]

Music Videos and Short Films

In addition to directing and editing commercials, Peer has created over a dozen music videos for bands including The National, Paramore, Yeasayer, Interpol, Ponytail, Junior Boys, and Julien Baker.[3] Her short films have been shown at the Whitney Museum of Art, Anthology Film Archives, the Contemporary Arts Center, the Sculpture Center, Interstate Projects, Kate Werble Gallery, Hauser & Wirth, The Queens Museum, and MoMa.[4][5] According to Peer, her films often focus on real and fictional characters "who wouldn’t typically be considered camera-ready and present them as the heroes they are."[5]

Television and Web Series

Peer directs and edits a short film series called Danny's Food Corner, which stars comedian, actor, and Celebrity Book Club podcast co-host Lily Marotta as Danny, a father, mixologist, and cooking instructor.[6][7] The series has been described as “if the characters from The Departed were queer and on an episode of Chef’s Table.”[6]

She is writing and directing an upcoming dramatic-comedy series, Who's Annie?. The show stars and is based on the life of Annie Pisapia, an aspiring actor whom Peer met at a Burger King.[8] Through various scripted scenes exploring women's roles on camera, Annie acts both in jobs as an actor and in her real life story, which includes 12-step programs, five marriages, and jail time.[9][10]

Who's Annie? was a recipient of the 2019 New York Foundation for the Arts NYC Women's Fund for Film, TV and Theater, accepted into The Gotham's Episodic Lab fellowship program in 2019, and is a finalist in the ScreenCraft Film Fund in fall 2021.[9][11]
