List of Hockey Night in Canada commentating crews (1990s)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Throughout this period, Hockey Night in Canada broadcasts started at the Canadian Broadcasting Centre in Toronto in the regular season and the first two rounds. However, on-site broadcasts began in the final two rounds of the playoffs, including the Stanley Cup Finals. Ron MacLean and Don Cherry hosted the national broadcast, the main Conference Final, the Stanley Cup Finals, and Coach's Corner across Canada while Scott Russell and one of Rick Bowness, Greg Millen, or Kelly Hrudey hosted the other Conference Final. Meanwhile, game reporters/hosts were sent to games during the regular season and the first two rounds of the playoffs. Scott Russell hosted the Montreal Canadiens games, Steve Armitage hosts the Western Canada and Vancouver Canucks games. Meanwhile, Tom Harrington either the Calgary Flames or Edmonton Oilers games from Alberta while Scott Oake hosted the Eastern Canada and Winnipeg Jets games. In those instances, the game host/reporter interviews the players and coaches during the intermissions.

Notes[edit]

  • 1990 – According to Dick Irvin Jr.'s My 26 Stanley Cups book, the play-by-play man for the Sabres-Canadiens series, detailed in full that he received a call from the CBC Sports executives the day before Game 5 of the series in Buffalo and was told that should the Toronto Maple Leafs be eliminated from the playoffs, they would be sending Bob Cole to do play-by-play for the rest of the series, and Irvin would do colour commentary along with Scotty Bowman. As the Leafs were eliminated, CBC sent Cole to Buffalo for Game 5, and Irvin, who didn't like the idea of being replaced in the middle of a series, said he didn't want anything to do with the broadcast and sat out the rest of the series, but he was back to do colour commentary for the next round. Scotty Bowman worked Game 5 with Bob Cole but then called in "sick" (or something like that) for Game 6 in Montreal since he wasn't happy either about the way Irvin had been pushed aside. So John Garrett was flown into Montreal on last-minute notice to do colour commentary for Game 6.
  • 1991 – Game 2 of the Bruins-Penguins series was joined in progress at 9 PM as CBC aired the final episode of the prime-time soap Dallas.
  • 1994 – The conferences were renamed from Campbell and Wales to Western and Eastern respectively, and the divisions' names were renamed from Adams, Patrick, Norris, and Smythe to Northeast, Atlantic, Central, and Pacific respectively.[251] New league commissioner Gary Bettman, who had previously worked in the National Basketball Association (NBA), thought the old names were confusing to non-traditional fans and believed that a change to geographically named divisions, as used in the NBA and most other North American professional sports, were more easily understandable to new fans. In addition, the playoff format was changed to a conference-based seeding over division-specific brackets: the division winners were seeded 1–2 by point total order while the top 6 remaining teams in the conference were seeded 3–8.[251][252] However, unlike the NBA, the NHL matched the highest-seeded winners against the lowest-seeded winners in the second round. To reduce the number of long trips to and from the West Coast, whenever a Central Division team played a Pacific Division team in the playoffs, the format was 2–3–2 rather than the traditional 2–2–1–1–1, a format that was only used for the 1993–94 season.
  • 1999 – With the addition of the expansion Nashville Predators, the NHL realigned this year to a strictly geographic six-division structure (three per conference), erasing the last vestiges of the traditional Adams/Patrick/Norris/Smythe four-division structure abandoned in 1993–94. Other than the reassignment of Colorado to the Western Conference in 1995 due to its move from Quebec, the divisions' membership had remained static for five years although several franchises had relocated. As part of this realignment, the Toronto Maple Leafs moved from the Western Conference to the Eastern Conference. This put three of the Original Six teams and the three original cities of the NHL in the Northeast (Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto).[253][254][255][256][257] In addition, the playoff format was changed: the division winners were seeded 1–3 by point total order while the five remaining teams in each conference were seeded 4–8. No change from the rules that were enforced in 1994.
