The Point is a studio show which shows highlights of National Hockey League games and stories about the league on ESPN2 and ESPN+ on Thursdays.

Notable segments[edit]

The Turning Point[edit]

Introduced during the 2022 Stanley Cup playoffs, this is where the panel will discuss a certain play that happened during one of the games, featuring demonstrations and quick analysis.

Top 6[edit]

Top 6 is a countdown of the top plays and moments across the hockey world past and present. It is modeled after SportsCenter’s famous Top 10 plays segment.

Parm Time[edit]

At the tail end of the show, host John Buccigross will read and review tweets sent in by fans of their chicken parmesan, paying homage to colleague Ray Ferraro, who is nicknamed “Chicken Parm”. Afterwards, as they sign off, someone from the ESPN cafeteria staff will bring out a meal for the panel, usually something to celebrate a national day for some type of food, e.g. donuts.

History[edit]

As part of ESPN’s new deal with the NHL, the network was allowed to produce a studio show that would air on either ESPN or ESPN2.

Announced on September 30th, The Point made its debut on October 7, 2021 on ESPN2 live from Studio F in ESPN’s Bristol, Connecticut studios. Mainly a weekly Thursday show, as part of ESPN’s NHL Opening Week programming, the show moved to daily shows on ESPN from October 12-15, with two editions airing on October 12th, the first airing in its usual afternoon time slot from Las Vegas, and the second airing in primetime from Tampa.

ESPN also broadcast two shows from Vegas for All-Star Weekend.

ESPN began producing daily shows again during the 2022 Stanley Cup playoffs, and announced that they would take the show on the road during the 2022 Stanley Cup Finals.
