List of Imperial Guard members
This is a list of the members of the Imperial Guard, a fictional army of superpowered beings in the Marvel Comics universe.
Membership[edit]
1970s members[edit]
- Starbolt[1] – Formerly known as Bolt. He is covered with a flame-like energy at all times that he can project from his hands, and can fly in space without requiring protection. He is an analogue of Sun Boy.[citation needed] He is among the longest-standing Guardsmen. He survived the battle with Vulcan, and was one of the few selected to explore 'the Fault', but was killed by a creature in the Fault during Realm of Kings.[citation needed]
- Scintilla[1] - Formerly known as Midget,[2] she is an analogue of Shrinking Violet.[citation needed]She is one of the Guardsmen who survived the battle with Vulcan.
- Flashfire (Grannz)[1] – Formerly known as Tempest, Flashfire can generate bolts of lightning. He is the counterpart of Lightning Lad, and his real name is a reference to that character's real name, Garth Rannz.[3] His name was changed from Tempest to Flashfire to avoid confusion with DC Comics' Tempest (formerly Aqualad).[citation needed] He was wounded battling Vulcan. During Realm of Kings he was one of the few selected to explore "The Fault".[4]
- Pulsar[1] – Formerly known as Impulse, Pulsar is made of pure energy and his form is only contained by his costume. He can release blasts of energy from his visor. He is an analogue of Wildfire.[citation needed] His name was changed from Impulse to Pulsar to avoid confusion with the Legionnaire named Impulse (Kent Shakespeare), who had been introduced since Impulse/Pulsar had debuted.[citation needed] He was apparently killed by Vulcan, but appeared in War of Kings.[citation needed]
- Fang[1] – A Lupak. Fang is a feral, agile warrior with uncanny senses and sharp canine teeth. He was transformed into a Brood and killed by Wolverine,[5] who took his costume to infiltrate the Imperial Guard. Due to the advanced cloning talents of the Lupaks, Fang was revived through cloning with his identity intact as well as gaining vast cosmological abilities ranging to flight, matter and energy manipulation and long-range teleportation.[6] He is the counterpart of Timber Wolf.[citation needed]
- Oracle (Sybil)[1] – Oracle is a Shi'ar who possesses psychic powers, including but not limited to telepathy and precognition. She is a counterpart of Saturn Girl.[citation needed] She has been romantically linked with both Gladiator and Starbolt.[citation needed] She was injured in the battle with Vulcan, but she survived the attack and became his advisor during his reign of the Shi'ar. During Realm of Kings she was one of the few selected by Gladiator to explore "The Fault".[7]
- Mentor[1] - An intelligent and a skilled tactician, Mentor is an analogue to Brainiac 5.[citation needed] He should not to be confused with Mentor the Eternal, father of Thanos. He survives the battle with Vulcan, and becomes the new leader of the Imperial Guard when Gladiator becomes Majestor. He leads a small team of Guardsmen into the Fault during Realm of Kings.[citation needed]
- Gladiator (Kallark)[1] - A member of the Strontian race, Gladiator is the Imperial Guard's leader. Because of this role, he was more than once used as an advisor by Lilandra. He is unflappably loyal to the ruler of the Shi'ar Empire, whomever that may be. He has been romantically involved with fellow Guardsperson Oracle.[citation needed] He is an analogue of Superman and Superboy (along with design cues resembling Jack Kirby's OMAC character),[citation needed] and possesses a number of relevant powers (strength, endurance, flight, enhanced senses, and the ability to travel through space unaided), with one caveat: his powers are dependent on his self-image. If he believes that he can lose a fight, his powers become weaker, and he has been physically humbled by purely psychic assaults.[citation needed] He personally defeated Vulcan in combat and ripped out Vulcan's eye. Gladiator became Majestor of the Shi'ar after Lilandra was killed, and made Mentor the new leader of the Imperial Guard.[citation needed]
- Neutron[1] - Formerly known as Quasar, Neutron is a member of the Stygian race and is superhumanly strong and durable. His name was changed to Neutron when the character then known as Marvel Man changed his name to Quasar.[citation needed] Neutron later developed a strong enmity for the hero following their encounter in "Operation: Galactic Storm". At one point, he was discharged from the Guard and sent to Earth, which was serving as an intergalactic prison at the time, but was later pardoned and returned to the Guard. He was apparently killed by Vulcan, but reappeared and was among the Imperial Guardsmen who attacked the Kree homeworld in War of Kings.[8] During Realm of Kings he was one of the few selected to explore "The Fault".[citation needed]
- Smasher (Vril Rokk)[1] - Smasher is superhumanly strong and durable, and can fly under his own power. He can "download" powers via the special goggles that he wears; so far he has been seen to obtain in this manner "penta-vision" and the ability to travel into hyperspace ("4-space") without a vehicle.[citation needed] He has been romantically linked with Plutonia.[citation needed] He is an analogue of Ultra Boy.[citation needed] He was killed by Vulcan.[citation needed] Since then, many others have taken the role and name of Smasher, but never lived to serve for a long time.[citation needed]
- Titan[1] - He can increase his size. Titan is an analogue of Colossal Boy.[citation needed] He was severely wounded in combat with Vulcan, but survived.[9]
- Electron[1] - He is a Shi'ar with the ability to generate and control electricity. He is one of the Guardsmen who survived the battle with Vulcan.[citation needed]
- Astra[1] - Has the ability to become intangible. She is an analogue of Phantom Girl.[citation needed] Astra is one of the Guardsmen who survived the battle with Vulcan.[citation needed]
- Nightside[1] - Formerly known as Nightshade, she can generate darkness, an ability common to all members of her species. Nightshade is an analogue of Shadow Lass.[citation needed] Her name was changed to Nightside to avoid confusion with the DC/Charlton Comics character Nightshade and Marvel's villainous Nightshade.[citation needed] Like Oracle, she was injured by Vulcan, but recovered and was seen[10] battling the X-Men and the Starjammers. She later died during the Imperial Guard's assault on the Kree homeworld.[8]
- Hobgoblin[1] - Formerly known as Shapeshifter and Shifter, Hobgoblin is a member of the Chameleoid race and like Nightshade's race, Hobgoblin's powers are the natural ability of his race. The exact limitations of his shapeshifting ability are unknown, although he has been seen to transform into large, non-humanoid creatures. He is an analogue of Chameleon Boy. His name was changed to "Shapeshifter" to avoid confusion with the Spider-Man foe Hobgoblin. The first Hobgoblin was killed while impersonating Lilandra.[11] A second Hobgoblin appeared only to be apparently killed by Vulcan.
- Magique[1] - Formerly known as Magic, Magique can generate illusions. She is a Shi'ar magician of some aptitude. Magique is an analogue of Princess Projectra, and of the White Witch as well.[citation needed] She is one of the Guardsmen who survived the battle with Vulcan, but was killed by Adam Warlock during War of Kings.
1980s recruits[edit]
- Manta[12] - She possesses the powers of flight, generates flashes of blinding light, and the ability to see in the dark. Her species experiences memory in a manner different from that of most other species. She is an analogue of Dawnstar. She was one of the survivors of the battle with Vulcan. During Realm of Kings she was one of the few selected to explore "The Fault".
- Warstar (B'nee and C'cil)[12] - Warstar is a duo. The small one, B'nee, can generate electricity, and the large one, C’cil, is immensely strong and durable. B'nee rides on C'cil's back. (The characters were named for the puppets Beany and Cecil.) They were discharged and sent to Earth, which was turned into an intergalactic prison in Maximum Security. They later returned to the Guard. Warstar was ripped in half when the Guard fought for their new emperor Vulcan against the X-Men and Starjammers, but survived and was carried away by their fellow Guardsmen.
- Earthquake[12] - Formerly known as Quake; he has rock-like skin and the ability to manipulate silicate matter. He survived the battle with Vulcan and serves the current emperor of the Shi'ar Empire.
- Hussar[12] - She wields a whip that she uses to channel bio-electricity into her opponents to shock and paralyze; she had been discharged and sent to Earth, which was turned into an intergalactic prison in Maximum Security. She appears to have been pardoned since she was among the Imperial Guardsmen, who recently attacked the Kree homeworld.[8] During the assault, Hussar and Electron fought Ronan the Accuser, who was ultimately defeated by Titan.[citation needed] During Realm of Kings she was one of the few selected to explore "The Fault".[citation needed]
- N'rill'iree[13] - Possesses enhanced strength, endurance, and resistance to physical injury. N'rill'iree was not seen among the Imperial Guard during the battle against Vulcan.
- Webwing[14] - Possesses tentacles which exude a powerful narcotic sedative. Webwing was discharged and sent to Earth, which was turned into an intergalactic prison in Maximum Security, and has not returned to the Guard.[citation needed]
- Blackthorn[14] - He is capable of communicating with and controlling plant life. Was not seen among the Imperial Guard during the battle against Vulcan.
- Zenith[15] - Can siphon the potential energy of living beings and convert it into blasts of concussive energy, and is the brother of Raza Longknife of the Starjammers. Is killed in a battle against the Starjammers and Binary (Carol Danvers).[16]
- Black Light[15] - He can project bolts of Darkforce energy from his eyes [15] and hands.[8] He is also capable of flight.
- White Noise[15] - She uses high-pitched frequencies produced by her vocal cords to shatter objects, disorient her opponents, and fly. During War of Kings, she and Gladiator fought and defeated Black Bolt.[citation needed]
1990s recruits[edit]
- Onslaught[17] - He possesses enhanced strength, speed, agility, reflexes, endurance, dexterity, and reaction time. He is a skilled martial artist. He is not to be confused with the supervillain Onslaught. He is an analogue of Karate Kid.[citation needed]Onslaught was first seen with the Shi'ar Imperial Guard during the crisis that came to be known as Operation: Galactic Storm. He was among a small strike force that battled Quasar in outer space, keeping the young Avenger busy long enough so that he would not interfere with the launch of the Nega-Bomb, the weapon that ended the war by killing 90% of the Kree population.[citation needed]
- Solar Wind[17] - He absorbs cosmic energy and projects it through the chest plate on his armor. Solar Wind and his fellow Guardsmen Voyager and Moondancer quit the Imperial Guard after they wished to help Quasar battle the Stranger. After the Guards' leader, Gladiator, ordered the trio not to become involved, they resigned from active duty.[citation needed]
- Moondancer (Myla)[17] - She possesses vast abilities related to extrasensory perception. She is an analogue of Dawnstar. She and her fellow Guardsmen Voyager and Solar Wind quit the Imperial Guard after they wished to help Quasar battle the Stranger. After the Guards' leader, Gladiator, ordered the trio not to become involved, they resigned from active duty.[citation needed] During Realm of Kings Moondancer was among the Guard and was briefly seen in action.[citation needed]
- Voyager (Divad)[17] - He possesses teleportation abilities. Voyager and his fellow Guardsmen Solar Wind and Moondancer quit the Imperial Guard when they wished to help Quasar battle the Stranger but were forbidden to by Gladiator.[citation needed] Since War of Kings, Voyager made his comeback to the Imperial Guard and was seen in several stories.[citation needed]
- Glom[17] - He is able to ingest and metabolize any form of energy he encounters. He is an analogue of Matter-Eater Lad.[citation needed]
- Hardball[18] - He possesses a rubbery body that allows him to leap great distances and rebound off any object he strikes. He is an analogue of Bouncing Boy.[citation needed]
- Fang II[19] - This Fang has never really been confirmed to be a member of the Guard; it seems the Lupak look like her and when one is killed in battle they are succeeded by another retaining the name and the costume; she was never seen with the Guard but was hired to assassinate Cerise; her successor does not appear any time before her death; her jaw was ripped apart by Cerise.[20]
- Fang III[21] - This is the second male Fang to be seen. He was one of the Guardsmen who survived the battle with Vulcan and was also with the Guard during the first attack on the Kree during War of Kings. He was among those selected by Gladiator during Realm of Kings to explore "The Fault".
- Commando (M'Nell)[22] - He possesses enhanced strength, endurance, and intellect. He was once a Kree soldier. Being himself a Kree initially made Commando somewhat of an outsider in the Shi'ar Imperial Guard. But after their defeat of the Supreme Intelligence, Commando was accepted whole-heartedly into the group. During Realm of Kings he was seen in action with the Imperial Guard. He is the analogue of Mon-El.[citation needed]
2000s recruits[edit]

- Squorm[25] - Squorm dwells within a suit of powered armor that carries a plasma-based firearm. Squorm was subsequently defeated by the X-Man Beast, who slashed open Squorm's space-suit. He survives the attack and was seen amongst the Imperial Guard during War of Kings.[citation needed]
- Monstra[25] - She is a monstrous four-armed woman with superhuman strength and durability.[citation needed]
- Cosmo[25] - The character’s name was revealed by Grant Morrison in an interview. As the codename was never used in print, many readers perceived him as the already established Imperial Guard member, Neutron; however, the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: Teams 2005 has listed them as two separate members. He is near-identical to Neutron, although the black and white star field design on his costume are reversed. Like Neutron, he is a Star Boy analogue.[citation needed] He was killed by Vulcan.[citation needed]
- Arc[25] - He possesses the ability to generate electricity. Like Tempest/Flashfire, he is an analogue of Lightning Lad.[citation needed] Arc was not seen among the Guardsmen during the battle against Vulcan, but was with them during the attack at Kree space during War of Kings and later briefly during Realm of Kings.[citation needed]
- G-Type[27] - Belonging to the Hodinn race, G-Type is a being consisting of a sentient star in a protective suit. His brain is vulnerable to magnetic interference, he was dissolved by Xorn,[28] but returned during Realm of Kings.[29]

- Plutonia[27] - She can become intangible, and was involved in a relationship with deceased member Smasher. Like Astra before her, she is an analogue for Phantom Girl.[citation needed] She is one of the Guardsmen who survived the battle with Vulcan. Plutonia is the only 2000s recruit that is often used and currently still active serving the Imperial Guard.[citation needed] Plutonia was among those selected by Gladiator during Realm of Kings to explore "The Fault". There it became clear she has a crush on Mentor, the current leader of the Imperial Guard.[citation needed]
- Blimp[27] - He can inflate his body to become lighter than air. Blump is an analogue of Bouncing Boy.[citation needed]
- Schism[27] - She possesses the ability to split her body into two bodies. As one body, half of her body is white and the other half black; when split, each body is one color. She is an analogue of Duo Damsel. Her name was revealed by Grant Morrison in an interview and was confirmed in the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: Teams 2005.[citation needed]
- Fader[27] - He can become invisible, and apparently automatically becomes visible when unconscious.[citation needed] He claimed to be "hiding in the ultraviolet".[citation needed] He carried a light-based firearm.[citation needed] He is an analogue of Invisible Kid.[citation needed]
Shi'ar Death Commandos[edit]
The Shi'ar Death Commandos are elite alien mercenaries from all the corners of the Shi'ar Empire that handle missions deemed too politically for the Imperial Guard. Among its members are:
- Black Cloak[30] - Black Cloak is the field leader of the Shi'ar Death Commandos. Black Cloak carries a spear that gives off an energy discharge that disintegrates his victims. - Offset[30] - Second of two females of the team. She looks like a green-skinned mantis-like insectoid alien with four arms. Offset has a large jaw with razorsharp teeth. She also used blades while fighting others, can lock down the superhuman abilities of others with a touch, and can gain the memories of her victims by biting off and eating their heads. She was the second-in-command of the team.

- Xenith[32] - A female of the Strontian race, the same race as Gladiator; she's the leader of the Praetorians and faced Rachel Summers. Xenith is an analogue for Supergirl, as Xenith is also Gladiator's cousin.
- Hodinn[32] - A former member of the extinct race of which G-Type was a member. Dangerous and insane, Emperor Vulcan ingratiated him into the guard sending it against the Starjammers on the Shi'ar home port, Chandilar. During battle the Hodinn unlocked his armor and allowed his scorching body to send a huge heatwave in an attempt to kill all the Starjammers. However, the attack destroyed the planet and everyone on it.
- Pn'zo[32] - This creature seems to be robotic in nature where it has tendrils that sends out charges of electricity and can transport people. He attacked Korvus, but was eventually defeated.
- ZZZXX[32] - A symbiote using Raza Longknife as its host.
- Uncreated[32] - A race of former slaves who were originally called The Works.
