The Toa[lower-alpha 1] are a fictional species in the Lego franchise Bionicle. They are semi-organic bio-mechanical warriors with elemental powers destined to reawaken the spirit of Mata Nui and prevent the Makuta from taking over the universe.

Development[edit]

According to Christian Faber, one of the initial ideas for the Toa came up during his treatment for prolactinoma, in which he consumed pills that he imagined contained disease-fighting warriors sent to combat the cancer. The pills would eventually serve as the inspiration for the canisters that the Toa arrive in.[1]

Reception[edit]

The Best Reviews staff, affiliated with KDVR (also known as Fox 31 Denver), a television station from the United States, located in Denver, Colorado, called 70788 Kopaka — Master of Ice, released in 2015, the best Bionicle set, also going on to state that he is “—a great addition to any Bionicle collection.” as well as noting that the toy's cool ice spear and frost shield which can be converted into skis were features “—that makes him exciting to play with.”[2]

Influence[edit]

Whisper the Wolf, an original character featured in IDW's line of Sonic the Hedgehog comics, was partly inspired by Kopaka, alongside Sniper Wolf from Metal Gear and Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell.[3]

Notes[edit]

  1. The term "toa" is the Māori word for "warrior" in the Māori language. It was one of the few terms used in the series that the Māori people did not find to be offensive as a result of a dispute that occurred between many Māori iwi (tribes) from New Zealand and The Lego Group in 2002 in-which many terms were replaced or removed entirely from the canon as a result of the addition of the in-universe Naming Day ceremony, which was an attempt made by Lego to avoid potential lawsuits and to settle such disputes, and therefore remained in-canon.
