Beyoncé performing during the I Am... World Tour

Beyoncé is an American singer, songwriter, dancer and actress. As a prominent figure within popular culture during the early 21st century, Beyoncé's contributions to music through recorded releases and live performances established her as a culturally influential icon.[1]

Background and influences[edit]

Beyoncé names Michael Jackson as her major musical influence.[2] Aged five, Beyoncé attended her first ever concert where Jackson performed and she claims to have realized her purpose.[3] When she presented him with a tribute award at the World Music Awards in 2006, Beyoncé said, "if it wasn't for Michael Jackson, I would never ever have performed."[4] She admires Diana Ross as an "all-around entertainer".[5] Beyoncé was heavily influenced by Tina Turner, who she said "Tina Turner is someone that I admire, because she made her strength feminine and sexy".[6] And Whitney Houston, who she said "inspired me to get up there and do what she did."[7] She credits Mariah Carey's singing and her song "Vision of Love" as influencing her to begin practicing vocal runs as a child.[8][9] Her other musical influences include Prince,[10] Lauryn Hill,[5] Sade Adu,[11] Donna Summer,[12] Mary J. Blige,[13] Anita Baker, Madonna,[14] and Rachelle Ferrell.[5]

Responses from artists[edit]

  • Adele has described Beyoncé as her greatest inspiration. After winning Album of the Year over Beyoncé, she stated "my artist of my life is Beyoncé."[117]
  • Ariana Grande stated that she learned about harmonies, runs and ad-libs through listening to Beyoncé’s music.[118]
  • After being dropped by her record label, Lady Gaga was inspired to keep pursuing a music career after watching a Destiny’s Child video. "I remember watching Beyoncé thinking, 'Oh, she's a star. I want that.’[119]
  • Nicki Minaj credited Beyoncé and her husband as two of her influences, saying "anybody that knows me knows that those are the probably two most influential artists in my life" in an episode of Queen Radio. In another episode, she referred to Beyoncé as "the wave"[120]
  • Rihanna credited Beyoncé as her greatest influence in her early career, said that "She's huge and just an inspiration and one of the artists that I admire a lot."[121]
