Timeline of living governors[edit]
This is a chronological list of all who served as the governor of New York and were still living, at different periods in history. There has been one time period when there was only one living governor, beginning the inauguration of George Clinton in 1777 and ending with the inauguration of John Jay in 1795.
There have been four time periods when 10 living current or former governors co-existed. The first period was from the January 1857 inauguration of John A. King to the July 1857 death of William L. Marcy. The second period was from the January 1859 inauguration of Edward D. Morgan to the April 1859 death of William C. Bouck. The third period was from the January 1883 inauguration of Grover Cleveland to the February 1883 death of Edward D. Morgan. The fourth, most recent, and longest period was a 231 day period beginning with the January 1885 inauguration of David B. Hill to the August 1885 death of Reuben Fenton. If one includes future governors as well as past and current governors, there has been only one time period when 25 different governors co-existed. (see Statistics)

Statistics[edit]
- Because he was the first governor, and the fact that there have been at least three governors living since the inauguration of Morgan Lewis on July 1, 1804, George Clinton is the only person to ever hold the distinction of being the only living governor (July 30, 1777 to July 1, 1795).
- In addition, John Jay (from July 1, 1795 to July 1, 1804) is the only other person to have been one of two or less living governors.
- During four periods in the History of New York have there been 10 living governors. The first period was from January 1, 1857 to July 4 1857 (when Martin van Buren, Enos T. Throop, William L. Marcy, William H. Seward, William C. Bouck, Hamilton Fish, Washington Hunt, Horatio Seymour, Myron H. Clark, and John A. King were alive). The second period was from January 1 to April 19 1859 (when Martin van Buren, Enos T. Throop, William H. Seward, William C. Bouck, Hamilton Fish, Washington Hunt, Horatio Seymour, Myron H. Clark, John A. King, and Edward D. Morgan were alive) The third period was from January 1, 1883 to February 14, 1883 (when Hamilton Fish, Horatio Seymour, Myron H. Clark, Edward D. Morgan, Reuben Fenton, John T. Hoffman, Samuel J. Tilden, Lucius Robinson, Alonzo B. Cornell, and Grover Cleveland were alive). The fourth and most recent period was from January 6, 1885 to August 25, 1885 (when Hamilton Fish, Horatio Seymour, Myron H. Clark, Reuben Fenton, John T. Hoffman, Samuel J. Tilden, Lucius Robinson, Alonzo B. Cornell, Grover Cleveland, and David B. Hill were alive). The longest period where there have been 10 living governors was 231 days, ending with the death of Reuben Fenton in August 1885.
- John Jay was the only person to be both one of two or less living governors (from July 1, 1795 to July 1, 1804) and one of 5 or more living governors (from July 1, 1817 to May 17, 1829).
- There have been 25 administrations during which a governor has not died, the most recent being the administration of David Paterson. This does not include the administration of the incumbent Kathy Hochul as no governor has died since Mario Cuomo who died during the administration of Andrew Cuomo.
- Conversely, only during the administrations of David B. Hill, Al Smith, and Thomas E. Dewey has there been as many as five deaths during an administration.
- Because he was the first governor, and also because he's the longest serving governor, George Clinton holds the distinction of serving for the longest period without the death of a governor during his term (20 years and 336 days). In recent years, the governor who served the longest without a death in his term was W. Averell Harriman, who served for 4 years and 0 days.
- The longest period between deaths of governors was the 13 years and 230 days between the deaths of W. Averell Harriman on July 26, 1986 and Malcolm Wilson on March 13, 2000. The shortest period was the 59 days between the deaths of John Tayler on March 19, 1829 and John Jay on May 17, 1829.
- If the longest period between deaths is to be exceeded, no governor must die before August 18, 2028 (the current oldest and second oldest surviving governors, George Pataki and David Paterson, would then be 83 and 74 years old respectively).
- The second longest period was the 13 years and 211 days between the deaths of John Alden Dix on April 9, 1928 and William Sulzer on November 6, 1941.
- Only three times (in 1829, 1867, and 1886) have two governors died in the same year.
- Following their administrations' end in 1833 and 1851 respectively, Enos T. Throop and Hamilton Fish both lived to see a record 15 administrations prior to their deaths in November 1874 and September 1893 respectively. Morgan Lewis follows with 11 administrations after his own administration ended in 1807, prior to his death in April 1844. In modern times, the governor to have lived to see the most administrations following their own was Charles Poletti, with 7 following the end of his administration in 1943, prior to his death in 2002.
- If one includes future as well as past and current governors, the record of living governors sits at 25:
- Between Levi P. Morton's birth on May 16, 1824 and Daniel D. Tompkins' death on June 11, 1825, the following governors were alive: John Jay, Morgan Lewis, Daniel D. Tompkins, John Tayler, Dewitt Clinton, Joseph C. Yates, Nathaniel Pitcher, Martin van Buren, Enos T. Throop, William L. Marcy, William H. Seward, William C. Bouck, Silas Wright, John Young, Hamilton Fish, Washington Hunt, Horatio Seymour, Myron H. Clark, John A. King, Edward D. Morgan, Reuben Fenton, John Adams Dix, Samuel J. Tilden, Lucius Robinson, and Levi P. Morton.
- Since the inauguration of Eliot Spitzer on January 1, 2007 (a period of 17 years, 328 days), there have been at least four governors living. And since the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt on April 12, 1945 (a period of 79 years, 226 days), there have been no more than six governors living.
Oldest living governors of New York[edit]
Not all governors live to become the oldest of their time. Of the 52 deceased governors, 20 eventually became the oldest of their time, while 32 did not. George Clinton became the oldest living governor when he was inaugurated in 1777 and remained so until his death in 1812, for a record period of 34 years and 265 days. Hamilton Fish became the oldest living governor after the death of Myron H. Clark, but he survived Clark by only 1 year and 15 days.
On two occasions the oldest living governor lost this distinction not by his death, but due to the inauguration of a governor who was older. John Jay lost this distinction when John Tayler was inaugurated, but when Tayler died in March 1829, Jay regained it again until his own death 59 days later in May 1829 for a total period of 5 years and 4 days. Alonzo B. Cornell lost this distinction when Levi P. Morton was inaugurated.
Hamilton Fish was the oldest to acquire this distinction at the age of 84 years, and 20 days. Malcolm Wilson, who was 86 years, and 16 days old when he died on March 13, 2000 was the oldest and most recent governor to die without ever acquiring this distinction.
