List of chancellors of Germany by age
Chancellor | Date of birth | Term of office |
---|---|---|
Gerhard Schröder | 7 April 1944 | 1998–2005 |
Angela Merkel | 17 July 1954 | 2005–2021 |
Olaf Scholz | 15 June 1958 | 2021–present |
This is a list of chancellors of Germany by age. This table can be sorted to display the chancellors by name, order of office, date of birth, age at inauguration, length of retirement, or lifespan.
Two measures of longevity are given; this is to allow for the differing number of leap days occurring within the life of each chancellor. The first figure is the number of days between date of birth and date of death, allowing for leap days; in parentheses the same period given in years and days, with the years being the number of whole years the chancellor lived, and the days being the remaining number of days after their last birthday. Where the chancellor in question is still living, the longevity is calculated up to 24 November 2024.

Timeline of living chancellors[edit]
This is a chronological list of all who served as the chancellor of Germany and were still living, at different periods in history. There have been 3 time periods when there was only one living chancellor, first with the appointment of Otto von Bismarck in 1867 and most recently during the administration of Bernhard von Bülow following the 1901 death of Chlodwig zu Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst.
There has been one time period when 13 living current or former chancellors co-existed. This period was from the January 1925 appointment of Hans Luther to the February 1925 death of Friedrich Ebert. If one includes future chancellors as well as past and current chancellors, there has been only one time period when 26 different chancellors co-existed. (see Statistics)

- Bernhard von Bülow was the only person to be both an only living chancellor (from 6 July 1901 to 14 July 1909) and one of the 13 living chancellors (from 15 January 1925 to 28 February 1925).
- There have been 16 administrations during which a chancellor has not died, the most recent being the administration of Gerhard Schröder. This does not include the administration of Joseph Goebbels (who was himself the only chancellor to die during his administration), nor that of the incumbent Olaf Scholz, as no chancellor has died since Helmet Kohl who died during Angela Merkel's administration.
- Conversely, only during the administration of Adolf Hitler has there been as many as four deaths during an administration (Hitler in addition died in office in 1945). Only once (during the administration of Hermann Müller has there been as many as three deaths during an administration
- Because he was the first chancellor, and also because he's the longest serving chancellor, Otto von Bismarck holds the distinction of serving for the longest period without the death of a chancellor during his term (22 years and 262 days).
- The longest period between deaths of chancellors was the 23 years and 33 days between the deaths of Willy Brandt on 8 October 1992 and Helmut Schmidt on 10 November 2015. The shortest was the 1 day between the deaths of Adolf Hitler on 30 April 1945 and Joseph Goebbels on 1 May 1945.
- If the longest period between deaths is to be exceeded, no chancellor must die before 19 July 2040 (the current oldest and second oldest surviving chancellors, Gerhard Schröder and Angela Merkel, would then be 96 and 86 years old respectively).
- The second longest period is the 17 years and 182 days between the deaths of Chlodwig zu Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst on 6 July 1901 and Georg von Hertling on 4 January 1919.
- Following his administrations' end in 1917, Georg Michaelis lived to see a record 18 administrations prior to his death in July 1936. Bernhard von Bülow follows with 15 administrations after his own administration ended in 1909, and prior to his death in October 1929. In modern times, the chancellor to have lived to see the most administrations following their own was Heinrich Brüning with 9 following the end of his administration in 1932, and prior to his death in March 1970.
- If one includes future as well as past and current chancellors, the record sits at 26:
- Between Joseph Goebbels' birth on 29 October 1897 and Otto von Bismarck's death on 30 July 1898, the following chancellors were alive: Otto von Bismarck, Leo von Caprivi, Chlodwig zu Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst, Bernhard von Bülow, Theobald von Bethmann-Hollweg, Georg Michaelis, Georg von Hertling, Max von Baden, Friedrich Ebert, Philipp Scheidemann, Gustav Bauer, Hermann Müller, Constantin Fehrenbach, Joseph Wirth, Wilhelm Cuno, Gustav Stresemann, Wilhelm Marx, Hans Luther, Heinrich Brüning, Franz von Papen, Kurt von Schleicher, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Goebbels, Lutz Graf Schwerin von Krosigk, Konrad Adenauer, and Ludwig Erhard.
- Since the appointment of Theobald von Bethmann-Hollweg on 14 July 1909 (a period of 115 years, 133 days), there have been at least two chancellors living, and since the death of Lutz Graf Schwerin von Krosigk on 3 March 1977 (a period of 47 years, 266 days), there have been at no more than four chancellors living.
Oldest living chancellors of Germany[edit]
Not all chancellors live to become the oldest of their time. Of the 30 deceased chancellors, 16 eventually became the oldest of their time, while 14 did not (including both chancellors who died in office and 12 others). Otto von Bismarck became the oldest living chancellor when he was appointed in 1867 and remained so until his death in 1898, for a record period of 31 years, 29 days. Ludwig Erhard became the oldest living chancellor after the death of Lutz Graf Schwerin von Krosigk, but he survived von Krosigk by only 62 days.
On two occasions the oldest living chancellor lost this distinction not by his death, but due to the appointment of a chancellor who was older. Bernhard von Bülow lost this distinction when Georg von Hertling was appointed, but when von Hertling died in 1919, von Bülow regained it again until his own death in 1929 for a total period of 27 years, 50 days. Hans Luther lost this distinction when Konrad Adenauer was appointed.
Franz von Papen was the oldest to acquire this distinction at the age of 87 years, 172 days. Joseph Wirth, who was aged 76 years, 119 days when he died on 3 January 1956, was the oldest and most recent chancellor to die without ever acquiring this distinction.
