List of living former United Kingdom MPs
This is a list of living former Members of Parliament. It includes everyone who has sat as a Member of Parliament in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom and is still living as of 7 July 2021[update].
Overview[edit]
Members are shown in the list with their date of first election and their last day in Parliament, which is usually the date of dissolution before a general election, or the day on which they resigned. Breaks in service are not specifically shown, but any changes in party or constituency are recorded.
As of 18 August 2021[update], there are 1,065 former Members of Parliament still alive, including five who did not take their seats. The oldest is Patrick Duffy, aged 100; the youngest is Stuart Donaldson, aged 29. The earliest elected was Robert Lindsay, who was first elected in the 1955 general election; two others were first elected in the 1959 general election. Two have left Parliament during the current session, and 153 stood down or were defeated at the 2019 general election. The largest single group (202 members) is those who stood down or were defeated at the 2010 general election, which saw a very substantial turnover of members.
The list includes five former Prime Ministers, eight former Chancellors, eight former Foreign Secretaries, and twelve former Home Secretaries. 44 of the members have also served at some point in the European Parliament, 16 in the Senedd, 27 in the Scottish Parliament, and 22 in the Northern Ireland Assembly. 204 members served in the House of Lords following their time in the Commons, as life peers or (rarely) as hereditary peers. While membership of the Lords is normally for life, it is possible to stand down, and as a result not all are currently sitting in the Lords.
