This is a list of notable individuals who were born with or have acquired limb differences. In the United States alone, each year roughly 1 in 1,900 people are born with a limb difference,[1] and an additional 185,000 individuals experience a limb amputation.[2] However, this list represents a global collection of individuals with these differences. It includes those with confirmed limb differences, either congenital or acquired due to injury, disease, or medical conditions. The list is organized alphabetically within each field, such as arts, sports, and politics, and aims to highlight the achievements and contributions of these individuals in their respective areas.

  • Kevin Laue, a former basketball player, was born missing his left arm just below his elbow.[4]

Mixed Martial Arts

  • Kyle Maynard was born missing both legs above the knee, and both arms above the elbow.[5]
  • Nick Newell is a mixed martial artist who was born missing his left arm just below the elbow. He has a short stump of his forearm.[6]

  • Alex Brooker an English journalist, presenter, and comedian, born with hand and arm differences and a twisted right leg that was amputated when he was a baby.[15]
  • Adam Hills, an Australian comedian, radio, and television presenter, born without a right foot.[16]

  • Jessica Cox, the first licensed armless pilot in aviation history and was born without both arms.[17]

  • Jim Byrnes, actor who in his mid-20s was in a car accident that led to both his legs being amputated[19]
  • James Doohan, actor known for playing Montgomery "Scotty" Scott in Star Trek, lost his middle finger when he took a bullet to his hand while serving during World War II[20]
  • Zsa Zsa Gabor, film actress who had her leg amputated above the knee due to complications from an infection at age 94 [22]
  • James Stacy, American film and television star who had his left leg amputated following a car crash[25]

  • Ronnie Lott, American professional football player who had his pinky amputated due to a game injury[29]
  • Curt Marsh, American professional football player who had a foot amputated due to football related-injuries[30]
  • Jim Otto. American professional football player who had his right leg amputated in his late 60s[31]

Mountaineering

  • Aron Ralston, mountaineer who survived a canyoneering accident by cutting off part of his right arm[32]

  • George Eyser, German-American Olympic gymnast who lost most of his left leg in a train accident during his youth[34]
  • Amy Purdy, professional snowboarder who had both legs amputated below the knee after a meningitis infection at 19 years old[36]

  • Tony Iommi, guitarist for Black Sabbath who lost the tips to two of his fingers at 17 years old in a factory machine accident[42]
  • Waylon Jennings, American singer and songwriter who had his foot amputated due to complications from diabetes the year before his death[43]
  • Cole Porter, American composer who had his left leg amputated in his 60s due to osteomyelitis developed from a horse riding accident in his 40s[44]

Politicians

  • Max Cleland, American politician who had both legs and part of his right arm amputated after a grenade exploded near him during the Vietnam war[45]
  • Tammy Duckworth, American politician and retired Army National Guard lieutenant colonel serving as the junior United States senator from Illinois, who lost both right legs and some mobility in her right arm when her helicopter was hit by a grenade during the Iraqi War[46]
  • Rahm Emanuel, former Chicago mayor who had part of his right middle finger amputated due to an infection he had as a teenager[47]
  • Bob Kerrey, American politician who had the lower part of his right leg amputated due to injuries from the Vietnam War[50]

  • Terry Fox, Canadian athlete, humanitarian, and cancer research activist who had his right leg amputated at age 19 after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma[54]
  • Heather Mills, former model, businesswoman and activist who lost her left leg in a road accident[55]
  • Miles O'Brien (journalist), journalist, whose left arm above the elbow was amputated after an injury from television equipment falling on his left forearm[57]
