List of vampire traits in folklore and fiction
The following tables compare traits given to vampires in folklore and fiction. Over time, some attributes now regarded as integral became incorporated into the vampire's profile: fangs and vulnerability to sunlight appeared over the course of the 19th century, with Varney the Vampire and Count Dracula both bearing protruding teeth,[1] and Murnau's Nosferatu (1922) being the first vampire to be killed by daylight on screen.[2] Fatal exposure to sunlight of a vampire in their coffin dates at least as far back as The Story of Yand Manor House (1898) by E. and H. Heron.[3]
Although Bram Stoker's novel is the best known vampire fiction of the 19th century, it is the aristocratic figure of Lord Ruthven who is thought to have inspired the elegant and suave creature of stage and film.[4] Lord Ruthven and Varney were able to be healed by moonlight, although no account of this is known in traditional folklore.[5]
The cloak appeared in stage productions of the 1920s, with a high collar introduced by playwright Hamilton Deane to help Dracula "vanish" on stage.[6] Recent vampire fiction set in the present typically has the vampires dressed either like everyday humans, or in hyper-stylish but contemporary attire.
Appearance[edit]
Reflection, film and shadow refer to how the vampires appear in reflections, on film and if they cast shadows.

- ↑ Dracula and two of the three vampire sisters have "high aquiline noses, like the Count's" which some people believe hints that Dracula and these two are related. A scene between them also reveals that Dracula is capable of love and that they know it. These pieces of information may or may not show that Dracula is fertile and that he has transformed his own daughters into vampires by incestuous means. However, the author does not give any more information on that subject, so this remains only a theory.
- ↑ In the profile from Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, it is stated that Remilia's victims usually stay alive, which prevents her from increasing the numbers of her kind, though this is because of her light diet. In Perfect Memento in Strict Sense, humans sucked dry by a vampire are said to turn into zombies.

Notes[edit]
- ↑ Although Lestat mentions that he develops a fondness for counting, it is not a true weakness.
- ↑ Discworld vampires are immortal; even fatal weaknesses only reduce them to ash. A drop of blood can restore them to full health if it comes in contact with the ashes
- ↑ Cultural aversion to sunlight. Sufficiently bright light can also turn them to ash
- ↑ 4.0 4.1 Cultural aversion
- ↑ Cultural aversion to all religious symbols
- ↑ Vampires believe that dying in running water prevents the soul from entering the afterlife.
- ↑ In Rosario + Vampire Capu2 episode 8, Moka is repelled by Tsukune's body odor when he eats garlic. However, it is not addressed as a vulnerability in the manga series.
- ↑ Marceline is seen entering people's houses uninvited but seems to have prior, largely unknown claims to extensive amounts of property across the Land of Ooo. In the Stakes miniseries, it is revealed that she possessed the power of a healing vampire, The Moon, allowing her to be unaffected by traditional vampire killing rituals.
