List of world leaders who can speak English

This is a list of presidents, prime ministers and other leaders who can speak in the English language. Many of these are not from predominantly-English countries, but know basic words and some even fluently.
Asia[edit]
- Hassan Diab, former prime minister of Lebanon spoke in English[1], but has resigned since the 2020 Beirut explosion
- Imran Khan, prime minister of Pakistan, speaks in Urdu, English[2] and Punjabi[3]
- Narendra Modi, prime minister of India, speaks in Hindi, Gujarati and English[4]
- Shinzo Abe, prime minister of Japan, mostly speaks Japanese but has spoken English many times in and outside Japan, such as in the Australian parliament[5]
- Vladimir Putin, president of Russia, primarily speaks Russian but has spoken English[6][7]
North America[edit]
- Donald Trump, president of the United States Of America, speaks only English
- Justin Trudeau, prime minister of Canada, speaks English and French
Europe[edit]
- Angela Merkel, chancellor of Germany, mainly speaks German, but spoke English in the British Parliament[8]
- Boris Johnson, prime minister of the United Kingdom, speaks only English
- Giuseppe Conte, prime minister of Italy, speaks mainly the Italian language, but has spoken English[9]
- Micheál Martin, taoiseach of Ireland, speaks mostly English but also some Irish
Africa[edit]
- Cyril Ramaphosa, president of South Africa, fluently and mainly speaks English, but also a small bit of Afrikaans and Zulu[10]
Oceania[edit]
- Jacinda Arden, prime minister of New Zealand, speaks English but she wishes she could speak[11] and wants her newborn daughter to learn Māori in school[12]
- Scott Morrison, prime minister of Australia, primarily speaks English, but has given the greeting ‘ni hao’ (Mandarin Chinese for hello) to a Korean woman, then after realising his confusion.[13] Mandarin is Australia’s second most common language
