Literacy House
Literacy House Lucknow (also called Saksharta Niketan) is a non-profit institution in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India, established to promote adult literacy, teacher training, and rural development. It was founded by American educator Welthy Honsinger Fisher in 1953 at Allahabad and relocated to Lucknow in 1956.[1]
History
Literacy House began in 1953 when Welthy Honsinger Fisher established a small, non-formal centre at Allahabad that linked literacy with vocational training. In 1956, the institution moved to Lucknow, where it developed into a regional centre for literacy training and community development.[1]
Fisher promoted a functional, context-based approach to literacy that connected reading and writing with agricultural and income-generating activities. This approach emphasized practical skills alongside basic education and influenced later literacy programmes in India.
Literacy House became known as a training hub for literacy workers and adult educators. Contemporary descriptions highlight its role in preparing instructors for village literacy work, though precise figures for teachers trained or learners reached vary across sources and should be attributed to primary records.[1]
Fisher received the Ramon Magsaysay Award for International Understanding in 1964 in recognition of her contributions to literacy and adult education.[2] She was also the first recipient of the Nehru Literacy Award, and in 1980 the Government of India issued a commemorative postage stamp in her honour.
Campus and architecture
The Lucknow campus was designed by architect Laurie Baker, known for his cost-effective and sustainable building methods. Its cluster of simple brick structures was intended to resemble an Indian village and provide a practical model for community-based education.[1]
