The Lithuanian Medical Students’ Association (LiMSA) is an independent association representing all medical students in Lithuania. It was founded in 1989 and currently consists of 2 local committees (Vilnius and Kaunas) and 6 standing committees.
History[edit]
In 1989, the Lithuanian Medical Students' Association (then Lietuvos studentų medikų asociacija) was founded. Ignas Staškevičius and Nerijus Numavičius[1], future founders of Maxima Group were among the founders. In 1991, LiMSA was admitted to the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations and introduced professional student exchanges. In 1998, LiMSA website was launched[2]. Research exchanges were introduced in 2005, and LiMSA joined National Tobacco and Alcohol Control Coalition in March, 2006. Since the summer of 2007, LiMSA has been organising freshers' camps of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Faculty of Medicine. Four remaining IFMSA standing committees – SCOME, SCOPH, SCORA and SCORP commenced activities in 2011. Board of LiMSA was expanded in 2016, when 2 positions of vice-presidents were transformed into 4.
Activities[edit]
LiMSA organizes international exchanges and takes part at the activities of the IFMSA[3]. The association works on various projects and collaborates with other organizations on the topics of public health, medical education, sexual and reproductive health including HIV/AIDS and human rights.[4][5] Every year at least one National General Assembly takes part in Kaunas or Vilnius where officials for upcoming year are elected and policy papers are adopted. Furthermore, at least twice a year trainings weekends are organized. LiMSA delegates participate in every General Assembly of the IFMSA[6] and Lithuanian Youth Council.
Standing committees[edit]
LiMSA has 6 standing committees, mirroring the IFMSA structure[7]. Two of them, SCOPE and SCORE usually closely collaborate as the activities of both committees include student exchanges and both committees share the same National Officers for Incoming and Outgoing students.
- Standing Committee on Medical Education (SCOME)
- Standing Committee on Professional Exchanges (SCOPE)
- Standing Committee on Public Health (SCOPH)
- Standing Committee on Sexual & Reproductive Health and Rights including HIV & AIDS (SCORA)
- Standing Committee on Research Exchanges (SCORE)
- Standing Committee on Human Rights and Peace (SCORP)
Leadership[edit]
LiMSA has always been led by medical students. The President, the Board and the national Team of Offcials are elected by members in a National General Assembly to serve a one-year term, the directors of the local committees and local Teams of Officials are elected in local elections. All the members of LiMSA Team of Officials have contracts of voluntary work. Past LiMSA officials have gone on to many leadership positions in the healthcare[8], NGOs[9] and academia.
