Liviu Vasilică (July 2, 1950 - October 19, 2004) was a Romanian folk music singer, pediatrician by profession. He started his artistic activity as a popular music vocal soloist since his student days (in Medicine, 1974-1980), ranking first at all the national stages of the Student Art Festivals, for the originality of the repertoire and the interpretation style.

Biography[edit]

Liviu Vasilică was born on the second day of July of the year 1950, in Plosca Commune, Teleorman County. His parents were intellectuals, prominent people of the time, his father a school director and his mother a teacher. As a small child, he was fascinated by Maria Tănase, whom he listened to carefully on the radio. The master learned the first songs from a Teleormanian rhapsodist named Gogu Ivașcu. The parents' dream for their son, Liviu, was for him to become a pharmacist, which happened. For a while, Liviu Vasilică was also a pediatrician at the Alexandria County Hospital. Those who knew him say that he loved children very much and that he was very gentle with the little ones.

He was married to Florina Vasilică for 23 years and together they had four children: Florin Vasilică, Svetlana Vasilică, Valentin Vasilică and Livia Vasilică. Of all the master's children, only Florin carries on his father's legacy, being the leader of the Grupul Teleormanul.

Death[edit]

Liviu Vasilică died, at only 54 years old, on 19 October 2004, in Bucharest, following a cirrhosis.[1]
