Elizabeth "Liza" Koshy (born March 31, 1996)[1] is an American actress and YouTube personality.

Koshy stars in the Hulu original television series Freakish as Violet Adams, and she played The Explorer in the YouTube Red series Escape the Night (2017). She is also set to host MTV's Total Request Live beginning in October 2017. As of September 2017, Koshy's main YouTube channel has 11 million subscribers and more than a billion views, making it the 88th most subscribed channel on the platform.[4] She won the Streamy Award for breakout content creator of 2016[5] and the Teen Choice Award for Choice Female Web Star in 2017.[6]

Koshy began posting comic videos on the Vine platform, in 2013, under the pseudonym "Lizzza".[3] When Vine closed in 2017, Koshy had over 5 million followers.[1] By 2016, Koshy was also becoming noted on the YouTube platform.[7] In November 2016, just before the 2016 election, Koshy interviewed president Barack Obama on her YouTube channel to encourage voter registration.[8][9]

Koshy was "the fastest YouTube personality [up to August 2017] to reach 10 million subscribers".[10] As of September 2017, her main YouTube channel has over 11 million subscribers and more than 1 billion views,[11] making it the 88th most subscribed channel on the platform.[4] Videos on her channel receive an average of nearly 10 million views.[12] As of the same month, her second YouTube channel had approximately 5 million subscribers,[13] she had more than 13 million followers on Instagram,[14] more than 2.5 million on Facebook[15] and more than 1 million on Twitter.[16] Her total social media penetration was approximately 45 million followers.[8][17]

Acting[edit]

In 2016, Koshy starred in the Hulu original series Freakish as Violet Adams,[18] and she is set to reprise the role in the show's second season in 2017.[19] Also in 2016, she played the role of Aday in the feature film, Boo! A Madea Halloween,[8] and a character in a YouTube Red series, Jingle Ballin'.[20] In 2017 she played a recurring character, The Explorer, in another YouTube Red series, Escape the Night.[21][22]

Other activities[edit]

Koshy is set to be one of the hosts on Total Request Live on MTV, broadcast live daily from Times Square in New York City beginning in October 2017.[10][17] Her previous hosting experience includes the live preshow at the 2017 Golden Globes Awards,[10] which received 2.7 million live viewers on Twitter – a record for the medium.[8] According to Quartz, all of MTV's "hopes for reinvention rest [on Koshy]. ... [MTV] is still figuring out how to connect with the new generation. ... It's hoping Koshy can help."[17] Koshy will also serve as a producer and developer of content for MTV.[23]

Koshy collaborates with The Giving Keys, a jewelry company that employs and supports the formerly homeless population, on a necklace collection.[24]

Personal life[edit]

Koshy was born and raised in Houston, Texas.[25] She is of half Indian and half Caucasian descent; her parents are Jose Koshy and Jean Carol née Hertzler. She has two older sisters.[26][27] From kindergarten until 5th grade, she was placed in a dual language educational and cultural program, where she learned how to speak Spanish fluently.[28] In 2014, after attending Lamar High School,[29] Koshy enrolled in the University of Houston and began to study business marketing.[27]

Koshy lives in Los Angeles, California. Since 2015, she has dated fellow YouTube personality David Dobrik.[26][30]

Reception and awards[edit]

Koshy has won a Streamy Award and Teen Choice Award and received other award nominations, including for the 2017 Shorty Award for YouTuber of the Year. Teen Vogue named Koshy to its 2016 list of "The 7 Female Comedians You Need to Know".[34] The Hollywood Reporter included Koshy in its 2017 list of "15 Rising Crossover Stars".[25]
