Lofty Peak was a fictional footballer who appeared in the comic strips in the British boys' comic Roy of the Rovers during the 1960s and 70s. He was a midfielder and defender, playing for Melchester Rovers. He first appeared in the strip in 1968.
The character is a fondly remembered childhood memory for several generations of British men.[1]
Career
Club
Lofty first came to the attention of the Rovers as a powerful inside left for Kingsbay.
It was in 1968 when Rovers were seeking midfield players, because they had to replace "Buster" Brown, Albert "Bomber" Reeves and Ossie Jones who – at that time – decided to leave. Firstly, young Geoff Giles signed for Melchester and then it was time for Lofty Peak to join the club.
Spotting his talent, Ben Galloway made a move for the sports master, transitioning him first into a left-half and then a dominant centre-back. Peak was the defensive rock of the Rovers for ten years, before retiring.
International
Lofty had one England cap.
Style of play
Lofty played as a left half and centre back for Rovers.
Managerial career
In 1979 he retired to become manager of Basran. Later he managed Stanthopre United and Stansfield in the lower divisions. He returned for two more spells as Basran manager.
Legacy
His feud with Geoff Giles was memorable: "On this day in 1968 - Geoff Giles knocks out Lofty Peak (who then played for Kingsbay) thinking he was an intruder at Mel Park. Lofty was though secretly going to see Rovers manager Ben Galloway about signing for the Rovers!"
Lofty won every possible trophy with Rovers domestically and internationally.
Personal life
Lofty was a school teacher.
Honours
All of these records are fictional of course, and only date as far as 2000, the last fully completed season of the comic strip.
