London Buses route 278 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. Running between Heathrow Airport and Ruislip. It is operated by Abellio London with 11 vehicles from Hayes (WS) garage[1] covering a distance of 10 miles. When operation of this route commenced on 7 December 2019, it replaced the withdrawn section of London Buses route 140 between Hayes & Harlington and Heathrow Airport.[2]
History
Route number 278 was previously used from 1960 to 1993.[3]
The present Route 278 was proposed in 2017 as part of a wider raft of changes to the Transport for London bus network in anticipation of changing travel patterns due to the introduction of Elizabeth line services providing new transport connections from Reading and Heathrow in the West to Abbey Wood and Shenfield in the East via Central London.[4]
From the beginning, it was intended that the introduction of Route 278 would coincide with the withdrawal of Route 140 between Hayes & Harlington and Heathrow Airport as well as the introduction of Limited stop Route X140 serving only major stops between Heathrow Airport and Harrow Bus station.[4] When the proposals were initially put to public consultation in July 2017 the route was planned to operate with a 12 minute frequency Monday to Saturday daytimes.[4] When the results of the consultation were published in November 2018 this was revised to a 15 minute frequency and an unchanged 20 minute frequency on evenings and Sundays.[5]
During November 2019, it was announced that changes to Route 140, along with the introduction of routes 278, X140 and N140 would be implemented on 7 December 2019.[6][7][8]
Route 278 restores connections that were severed with the withdrawal of Route 98 between Hillingdon Hill and Ruislip Station via Long Lane in 1989.[9]
