Loraine James is an electronic musician based in London, England.
Early life
James was born in Enfield, a borough in London, and grew up in social housing known as the Alma Estate. Her mother, a teaching assistant at a local primary school, introduced her to the piano and keyboard when she was six years old.[1] Her father passed away when she was seven years old. Throughout her adolescence, she would improvise compositions on her MIDI keyboard. In secondary school she studied GCSE Music, but did not enjoy it due to the preponderance of classical music.[2] At around age 15, she decided to pursue music for a living.[3] At age 16, she participated in a music production course at college, where she learned how to use Logic and Ableton. She later earned a degree in commercial music at the University of Westminster. When she was 18, she started going to gay clubs such as Heaven and Eagle London.[4]
Career
In 2015 James played her first live show at Birthdays, a bar in East London.[5] On May 6, 2017, while studying at Westminster, James released her debut album Detail via Fu Inle Records.[4][6][7] She soon gained the attention of Hyperdub records.[4] Before the release of “Detail” she had self-released 13 EPs on Bandcamp.[7]
Her next album For You And I was promoted with the single “Sick 9” and was subsequently released on September 20, 2019 by Hyperdub to widespread critical acclaim,[8][9][10] appearing on year end lists such as Pitchfork’s best experimental albums of 2019 and Fact’s best albums of 2019.[11][12]
She also released Button Mashing on record label New York Haunted in 2019.[13] On January 1, 2020 she released a collaborative EP entitled New Year’s Substitution 2.[13]
Her EP Nothing was released by Hyperdub on October 2, 2020, to critical acclaim.[14] [15] [16]
Accolades
In 2018, James was the recipient of the Oram Award.[17]
Influences and musical sound
James cites Lusine, Toe, The Mercury Program, Proem, Circa Survive, Aoki Takamasa, Paramore, Deftones, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Telefon Tel Aviv, Holly Herndon, the London music scene, her mother and the sky as influences.[1][3][7][18] She also cites IDM and math rock as influences.[7] James describes her sound as “ambient, sometimes glitchy, sometimes dancy and sometimes music-y.”[7]
Personal life
As well as creating music, James works as a primary school teaching assistant alongside her mother.[4] James is openly queer.[4]
