Lorri Hewett is an African-American author and educator.

Early life and education[edit]

Hewett obtained a BA in from Emory University, and an MFA at University of Iowa[1]

Career[edit]

Hewett's professional career started during her Freshman year in college, when her novel, Coming of Age, was accepted for publication by the publishing company, Holloway House. The book received a large amount of publicity Hewett's first semester, meaning she was busy with interviews at the time, as well as visits to several high schools across the Atlanta region. These visits focused on the writing process, in general.[2]

Works[edit]

  • Dancer (1999): A young black ballerina has big dreams but her parents do not support her because of the lack of future opportunities. This novel follows Stephanie’s journey with Miss Winnie, a former ballerina, and her nephew, Vance, as she strives for what she dreams for, but also deals with the harshness of reality.
  • Lives of Our Own (1998): After Shawna writes an editorial for her high school newspaper stating that she believes the local ‘Old South Ball’ should include participants from all walks of life, not just the white community, Shawna and Kari butt heads. However, the need for answers and allyship arises when Shawna and Kari uncover a dark and hidden secret that is shared between their families.
  • Soulfire (1996): Todd Williams, 16, has grown up in the hood, constantly facing violence, gangs, and the deaths of community members. With two different worlds pulling at him against his will, his brother a part of the gang and his best friend doing his best to stop the younger kids of the neighborhood from being recruited, Todd must deal with the consequences.
  • Coming of Age (1991): Lorri Hewett’s first novel focuses on three different black teenagers as they struggle through school, their futures, and personal problems. As a mixed teenager, Ruthie has a hard time fitting in with the black and white communities. A.J deals with family issues while trying to make a future for himself through football. Her attitude gets her in lots of trouble, but Erika loves to sing.
