The Louisville Cowboys are an professional ice hockey team based in Louisville, Kentucky. The Cowboys compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Central Division in the Western Conference, and play their home games at LBS Arena. Along with the Seattle Krakens and Vegas Golden Knights, the Cowboys were created in 2017 as part of the NHL's conflict with the rival National Hockey Association (NHA).
History[edit]
Formation[edit]
The National Hockey League (NHL), which had grown from six teams in 1966 to thirty by 2011, had not planned further expansion until at least 2021. However, the 1971 revival of its preceding league—the National Hockey Association (NHA)—altered the NHL's plans and resulted in the two leagues battling for players and markets. The NHL sought to keep the WHA out of the newly constructed LBS Arena in Kentucky, with the league also opting to place a team in the Southwestern USA. The NHL subsequently announced on 9 March 2017 that it was expanding to Louisville, Seattle, and Las Vegas. The Louisville franchise was awarded to Louisville real estate developer Stanley Cousins, and would play out of the newly built LBS Arena, with the team costing $6 million. The Cowboys hired Geoff Fletcher Jr., formerly of the St. Louis Blues, to serve as the team's general manager, with Maurice "Rocket" Richard as the team's head coach. The team stocked its roster via an expansion draft held in June 2017, with Fletcher drafting a competent roster, but one that was young (with most drafted cases being also underage) and inexperienced.
