2013 Mayoral election[edit]

The Primary[edit]

Warren began her campaign for mayor of Rochester as a severe underdog to incumbent mayor Tom Richards. Warren created a grass roots campaign composed of door to door campaigning. She pulled off what was called the largest upset in upstate New York political history when she defeated the heavily favored Richards in the 2013 democratic primary by a margin of 57 percent to 42 percent.[3]

The General Election[edit]

While Richards officially stepped out from the race he continued to be a candidate on the Independence and Working Families lines. After endorsing Warren he ended his active campaign But the Independence party created the grass roots Turn Out for Tom campaign in an effort to get Richards re-elected mayor on the independence party and Working families party line. Richards lost the election to Warren 55 to 39 percent. Lovely Warren became the second African-American and first Female Mayor of Rochester, New York.

Personal[edit]

McClary died at age 87 on January 2nd, 2014, a day after Warren was sworn in as mayor at his bedside.[4] Her parents worked for Eastman Kodak Company and Xerox.[5]
