Luís Manuel Ribeiro de Castro (born 3 September 1961) is a Portuguese football manager and former player. He is widely recognized for his successful coaching career at both domestic and international levels. He was born and raised in Vila Real, where he began his footballing journey.

Playing Career

Luís Castro played as a defender and spent his professional career in various Portuguese clubs, including Espinho, Guimarães, and Águeda. He retired from playing in 1997 at the age of 35 to focus on a career in coaching.

Coaching Career

Castro's coaching career began shortly after he retired as a player. He managed several smaller clubs before joining the coaching staff at FC Porto in 2006, where he would go on to manage the reserve team and, briefly, the main squad. His career highlights as a manager include:

  • FC Porto B: He led the team to win the 2015–16 LigaPro title, making them the first reserve team to win the Portuguese second division.
  • Shakhtar Donetsk: He won the 2019–20 Ukrainian Premier League title and notably led his team to two victories over Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League group stage.[1]
