Luas Derby

Luas Derby is the name of an Irish football derby between Shamrock Rovers and St Patrick's Athletic. The rivalry gets its name from the fact that both Richmond Park and Tallaght Stadium are merely minutes from Luas stops, and the Red Luas line runs along Tallaght and Inchicore, being separated by just 9 LUAS stops. The derby has been contested regularly since the 1950's, when Pat's entered the league.[1]

History
Despite St Pat's not having entered the league until 1952, the first game between the two sides took place in 1948, during The Saints' first appearance in the FAI Cup when they were still a non-league side. Both sides faced each other at the Semi-Final stage, where Rovers won 8-2. The rivalry would not be a tense one for much of the 20th Century, with Rovers focusing more on their Northside rivals, namely Drumcondra and Bohemians. The rivalry experienced a revival in the noughties however, with the formation of supporters groups for both Pats and Rovers in the form of the 'Shed End Invincibles' and 'SRFC Ultras' respectively in 2001. The rivalry would yet again intensify when Rovers moved to Tallaght Stadium in 2009, giving Pats competition for football and support in South-West Dublin.
As is common in the League of Ireland, there have been many players who have played for both teams, as well as many direct transfers between the two clubs.
