Conte Luca Gaetani Aquila Aragona Lovatelli (Italian: Conte Don Luca Gaetani dell'Aquila d'Aragona Lovatelli) (1955 - 2 April 2007) was one of the most famous wine producers in Italy.[1] His father owned a large winery named after the town in which it is located, Montalcino. It is currently operated by Luca's older brother Gelasio Gaetani D’Aragona Lovatelli(born 1954).[2]

Biography[edit]

Luca Gaitani Lavatli was born in 1955 to Lorian Gaetani Franchetti and Loffredo Gaetani d'Aragona Lovatelli.[3] He lived in Africa for some time and learnt to speak Swahili Afrikaans. Luca worked as a cameraman for the Italian National Television (RAI) with Giovanni Minoli on Dossier, as well as with several private networks.[4][5] He also reported from the Middle East. After learning about the war in Kosovo and Soviet-Afghan War, with Russian forces, he went on to meet Ahmad Shah Massoud.[4] in Afghanistan.

He had two sons and a daughter.[6]

Acquaintance with Edoardo Agnelli[edit]

Luca was a close childhood friend of Edoardo Agnelli and they often traveled together. "They were like brothers, Eduardo was the godfather of Raymond, Luca's first son, and it seems that their destiny also connected them," says Gelasio Gaettani Lovatelli, Luca's brother.[4][5]

Luca and Edoardo Agnelli travelled together to Iran in 1988. On this trip, Edoardo asked Mohammad Hassan Ghadiri Abyaneh [fa] to talk to Luca about Islam, after his own failed attempt to convert Luca to Islam. Qadiri Abyaneh talked to Luca alone for about two hours at the Azadi Hotel (Evin). Following this meeting, Luca visited the house of Seyyed Ali Golpaygani and converted to Shia Islam.[7][8]

Death[edit]

According to Il Journale, Luca left home at midnight on April 2, 2007, and his body was later found under the Garibaldi Bridge on the banks of the Trastevere River in Rome.[9]

Ghadiri Abyaneh writes about the suspected murder of Luca:

The news program of the Italian Channel 1 on April 3, 2007 announces the discovery of the body of 57-year-old Count "Luca Gaetani Lovatelli".[10][11]

His funeral was held at the Church of Santa Maria in Trastevere.[6] Luca is the third brother of the family to die a mysterious death.[12] Some Iranian media outlets and political figures have cited his death as the result of a conspiracy, citing reasons in some articles.[10][11] Italian analyst Massimo Lugli has hypothesized that Luca was beaten and that his death was intentional.[12]
