Lucha Comics is a Canadian Comic book publisher based in London, Ontario, Canada. Founded as a comic book publisher by Mexican-Canadian entrepreneur Rodolfo Martinez in 2013[1]. Its initial publications consisted of South Korean publications that had never been offered previously in English, including Boom and Stay. Now Lucha continues to publish creator-owned content, including titles such as Macbeth: The Red King, Arrowhead, Indios de Corazon, USUD, and The Adventures of Super Yeiya and Tornado Man.

Overview

Lucha Comics is a Canadian publisher of comics and graphic novels in Canada, with over 20 titles in its current library, covering multiple genres and age groups[2]. Lucha Comics' titles have been translated into many different languages, including Spanish, Russian, and Portuguese. Lucha Comics was founded in 2013 by Rodolfo Martinez, a long-time comic book fan and entrepreneur. Lucha launched its imprint in 2013 with Boom: Ugly Old Douchebag, a South Korean publication which was licensed from Blue Wolf Studios for its inaugural English-language version. More South Korean titles followed, including Stay and A Little Story.

Lucha Comics continued to publish creator-owned content from global talent and launched its first full-length graphic novel, The Kursk by Sasha Janowicz and James A. Bretney. As its first printed graphic novel, the successful kickstarter campaign was featured in Bleeding Cool[3]. From there, Lucha continued to add titles, such as Reality and the Aski: The Mayan Warrior series, based on the independent Lucha Libre star in stories reminiscent of classic Lucha Libre films.

Most recently, Lucha Comics has launched:

  • Macbeth: The Red King - A new history of Shakespeare's tragic figure, written by Shaun Manning. Rather than draw strictly from Shakespeare's interpretation, Manning conducted extensive research to recreate a new historical perspective on the infamous Scottish king.
  • USUD - This modern retelling of a Slavic mythological tale is written and drawn by Zdravko Jandric, as a fantasy/horror story.
  • Arrowhead - Written by Damian Wampler, this modern retelling of Moby Dick occurs in a futuristic sci-fi setting
  • The Fight We Never Saw - Written by Tony McDougall with art by Roel Palmeira, this story is a combat sports "What If" pitting Muhammed Ali against legendary Cuban boxer Teofilo Stevenson
  • Azteq vs. Prowler - Written by Roberto Mercado, this story was adapted into a feature-length film in 2019, and pits the star, Azteq against a slasher antagonist (The Prowler) in a story which is a tribute to the classic Mexican Lucha Libre films of the 60s/70s
  • Thrillrider - Written by Charles Gervais, the story focuses on a conspiracy by a large multinational conglomerate which infiltrates ageing family-owned amusement parks to deploy and test cutting-edge technology
  • The Adventures of Super Yeiya & Tornado Man - Written by Rodolfo Martinez, this series stars two young Latinx children who gain superpowers after being in close proximity to a meteor impact.
