Lug Healthcare Technology is a health technology company based in MadridSpain. Its focus is on the development of solutions of traceabilitysecurityefficiency and quality, for critical processes within hospitals, and more specifically in the pharmacy, clinical trials and oncology departments.[1]

History[edit]

LUG's project (honoring  the Lugh Celtic God) was born in 2006, under the name of SIG (Integrated Management System) and previously ISISH:[2] Identification Systems Integration and Hospital Safety (and also the Egyptian goddess Isis).

LUG contributes to the health system by developing tools to eliminate medical errors related to drug delivery,[3] prescription,[4] manipulation and administration.[1][5][6] Its products, based on a traceability software,[7] control the critical points at the hospital's pharmacy and boxes and also at the clinical research centers which provide oncology treatments or clinical trials.[citation needed]

The development of that system was made possible due to the experience of its founders in the realm of the Information and communications technology (ICT) in other sectors, especially food processing.[8]

This software tracks both drugs and patients during all the oncology/other therapy process, from the prescription to the drug administration[9] in adults and also in children,[10] taking care of the associated risk factors.[11] The process is mainly controlled by Global Trade Item Number identification (GTIN) EAN 13,[12] systems of voice, quality control and final labeling, among others.[2]

Between 2006 and 2008, Lug installed the first software module at the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital in Barcelona, focused on the production of cytostatic drugs.[13] Between 2008 and 2012 new system modules were developed to cover all critical issues in the therapeutic processes surrounding the hospital's pharmacies, with traceability in all instances, covering cytostatic production and also warehouse managementquality control, usage of leftovers, production of compoundingparenteral nutrition and total control of clinical trials.[14] The software led to a 10% reduction in the cost of cancer treatments when compared with the manual control of preparations, and helped lower liability costs for the hospital.[9]

In 2012 the software of Lug was installed  at the Corporació Sanitària Parc Taulí of Sabadell (Barcelona) and began its international expansion.[15] The software, which is used to control a wide variety of drugs and intravenous solutions, is currently used in six hospitals in Spain[1] and is being tested in several more, both in Spain and Latin America.[10]
