Hippo Labs is a British health technology company that develops software for use in NHS primary care. Its flagship product, Hippo Recaller, automates patient recall and engagement to support proactive care in general practice.[1][2]
History
Hippo Labs was co-founded in London in 2022 by Sachin Gupta (CEO) and Alistair “Ali” McMaster (CTO).[3]
The company emerged during a wider wave of digital transformation in NHS primary care, alongside organisations such as AccuRx, PATCHS and Babylon Health. Its founders have backgrounds in both clinical operations and software engineering, with McMaster previously working at Goldman Sachs.[4]
In 2024, Hippo Labs was selected for the DigitalHealth.London Accelerator programme, which supports scaling digital health companies in the capital.[5][6]
Products
Hippo Recaller
Hippo Recaller is a digital platform for proactive patient recall and preventative care. It automates the identification of patients needing care, messaging, and appointment booking through integrations with NHS systems. Features include:[7]
- Automated identification of patients due for review across long-term conditions and QOF targets.
- Integration with NHS clinical systems via approved IM1 pairing routes.[8]
- Multi-channel patient engagement through SMS, email, WhatsApp and the NHS App.
- Integration with third-party booking platforms such as Hero Health.[9]
Hippo Recaller is also referenced in NHS England’s 2025 roadmap for the NHS App as one of the third-party tools supporting integrated messaging.[10]
Adoption and impact
Hippo Recaller has been adopted by GP practices and Primary Care Networks (PCNs) across the UK.[11]
Independent write-ups by DigitalHealth.London and other organisations report improved uptake for diabetes care, immunisation campaigns, and housebound patient reviews, as well as reductions in administrative workload.[12]
Recognition
Hippo Labs has exhibited at major UK primary care conferences, including Best Practice Birmingham 2025[13] and Best Practice London 2026.[14]
In 2025, Hippo Labs was named HealthTech Company of the Year at the UK Business Tech Awards, and was also shortlisted for multiple other national recognitions including the LaingBuisson Awards (Health Tech Product of the Year) and HTN Awards (Best Health Tech Solution of the Year).[15][16][17]
In the same year, CEO Sachin Gupta appeared on the Inside Health Innovation podcast, hosted by Karina Malhotra, to discuss proactive and preventative healthcare in the NHS.[18][19][20]
