Luis Enrique Campillo Infante (1868 – 10 February 1915) was a Chilean politician, lawyer and academic who served as a member of the Chamber of Deputies of Chile.
A member of the Conservative Party, Campillo represented San Felipe, Los Andes and Putaendo from 1903 until his death in 1915. He was reelected three times and served throughout his parliamentary career on the Permanent Commission of Legislation and Justice.[1]
Political career
Campillo was born in Santiago in 1868, the son of Cosme Campillo Ibáñez and María Teresa Infante Tagle. He studied humanities at Colegio San Ignacio and later law at the University of the State, now the University of Chile. He qualified as a lawyer on 26 April 1890.
He taught Roman law at the University of Chile from 1892 and later held the same chair at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. He left his university post after entering the Chamber of Deputies in 1903.
During his time in Congress, Campillo worked mainly on legal and institutional matters. He introduced proposals dealing with electoral reform and the tenure of judges, and was also appointed to an extraordinary commission tasked with reviewing the Code of Courts.
Outside Parliament, he maintained a private legal practice and served as a board member of Banco de Santiago between 1897 and 1900 and Banco Popular from 1903 until around 1914. He was also active in Catholic charitable and workers' organizations.
Campillo died in Santiago on 10 February 1915, before completing his final parliamentary term.
