Luis Justo Pastor Aldunate Echeverría (9 August 1872 – 4 November 1948) was a Chilean politician, lawyer and diplomat who served as a member of the Chamber of Deputies of Chile.[1]

A member of the Liberal Party, he represented Tarapacá and Pisagua from 1918 to 1921 and was a member of the Foreign Relations and Colonization Commission.[1]

He also served as Intendant of Tarapacá Province from 1908 to 1910 and as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Worship and Colonization in 1920 under President Juan Luis Sanfuentes. His diplomatic career included service in Paris, Belgium and the Netherlands, as well as appointments as Chilean minister plenipotentiary to Spain, ambassador to Argentina and minister to France.[1]

Biography

Alongside his public career, he held senior positions in several financial and private institutions. He became a director of the Central Bank of Chile in 1932 and was reelected to its board in 1936. He also served as a director of the Club Hípico de Santiago and the Compañía de Teléfonos de Chile.[1]

He maintained an interest in international affairs beyond his diplomatic work and contributed a series of articles on international issues to Pacífico Magazine.[1]

He died in Santiago on 4 November 1948.[1]

Political career

A member of the Liberal Party, he combined a career in public administration with diplomatic and parliamentary service. He was appointed intendant of Tarapacá Province on 16 September 1908 and remained in office until 16 July 1910.[1]

His diplomatic career had begun several years earlier. From 1902 to 1906, he served as first secretary of the Chilean legation in Paris, before becoming chargé d'affaires in Belgium and the Netherlands, a position he held from 1906 to 1908. In 1907, he served as secretary-general of the Hague Peace Conference.[1]

He entered the Chamber of Deputies of Chile as representative for Tarapacá and Pisagua for the 1918–1921 legislative term, during which he sat on the permanent committee for foreign relations and colonization.[1]

Under President Juan Luis Sanfuentes, he served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Worship and Colonization from 1 July to 23 December 1920. The following year, he was appointed Chilean minister plenipotentiary to Spain. His diplomatic career continued with his appointment as ambassador to Argentina, where he served from 1925 to 1929, and later as Chilean minister to France in 1937.[1]
