Luke Rutter (22 September 1994 – 5 July 2017), also known as Soro Zinar, was a British volunteer who fought with the People's Defense Units (YPG) in the Rojava conflict of the Syrian civil war.
Rutter was killed, aged 22, in the Battle of Raqqa by an explosion, probably from an Islamic State improvised explosive device (IED) or rocket.[1][2] Five other YPG fighters were killed in the attack, including Americans Robert Grodt and Nicholas Warden.[3][4] Rutter was the fourth British citizen to die fighting Islamic State in Syria.[3][5] In a video released after his death, he stated he joined the YPG as it was "the best opportunity for peace" in the region.[4] His body was returned to Britain where an inquest was held.[6][1]
