Luke Thomas Shore (born 14 April 1997) is a Franco-British activist credited with re-establishing the school student movement in the United Kingdom.
Career[edit]
Shore was Director of the national school student body StudentVoice[1] from 2012-2013. He founded the School Student Working Group to lobby the Department for Education to democratise British schools[2] and ran a prominent national campaign calling for the establishment of a British school student union.[3][4][5] In 2013, he was elected as a Board member of the Organising Bureau of European School Student Unions,[6][7][8][9] the platform for cooperation between the national school student unions active in general secondary and secondary vocational education in Europe. In 2015, he was recruited by the Open Society Foundations (the philanthropic network of George Soros) to lead work with grassroots organisations and social movements in education.[10]
Activism[edit]
In 2011, Shore was involved in the international coordination of the 15-M Movement and Occupy movement and acted as a central coordinator of the 15 October 2011 global protests against economic inequality.[11] In 2014, Shore headed up the coordination team of the 17th November 2014 Global Protests, taking the demonstrators' demands for free education to the European Union and the United Nations.[12][13][14] As part of this campaign, he led student calls for national governments and United Nations institutions to prioritise free, equal access to education and safe learning environments in the United Nations' Post-2015 Development Agenda.[15]
