Colum McGuire is the Vice President Welfare of the National Union of Students in the United Kingdom, a position he took up on 1 July 2013. McGuire was elected at the 2013 NUS National Conference in April 2013 and re-elected by a large majority in April 2014.

McGuire was previously the Vice President Welfare at Kent Union, a position he held between 2011 and 2013.

Early life[edit]

As a child, McGuire was educated at Bishop Ramsey Secondary School and Sixth Form in Ruislip, West London. Before attending university, where he studied English and drama, he spent three years as a professional dancer in America.[1]

Vice President Welfare of NUS[edit]

During his term of office at NUS, McGuire has led prominent campaigns on student housing. This included the report, Homes Fit For Study, which found that substandard student accommodation was widespread.[2] McGuire has also been critical of university accommodation shortages,[3] and the increasing cost of student accommodation in the UK.[4]

McGuire is a strong opponent of payday loan lenders who target students,[5] persuading the Director of Fair Access, Les Ebdon, to refuse a speaking engagement because one such lender was speaking at the same event.[6]

In 2014, the Office of Fair Trading wrote to higher education institutions in the UK to warn certain debt recovery practices used by universities may breach consumer law, following a complaint from NUS and led by McGuire.[7]
