History[edit]

In 1944 Detroit Lutheran High School is opened at 1000 W. Grand Boulevard with 168 students. In 1951 Detroit Lutheran High School is moved to 5040 Joy Road with combined students from the west and east side of Detroit. In 1957, Lutheran East and Lutheran West High Schools are built and the classes at Detroit Lutheran High School were split up. Lutheran East was built at 20100 Kelly Rd, Harper Woods, Michigan 48225, next door to all girls Catholic Regina High School & all boys Catholic Notre Dame High School.

Lutheran East mascot was the Eagle (Elmer) and colors were Royal Blue & White. LHE later incorporated Grey as a third color. In 1958, Lights were erected on the football field named "Eagle Field" and it was one of the first Football Fields in the area to have lights. They rented out the field to many local Detroit high schools that wanted to play games under the lights. One of LHE's football coaches was inducted into the Michigan Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame: Bob Shippy, who was inducted in 1989.[1] The gym at Lutheran East was completed in 1971 with funds from the Dollar-A-Month Club (The basketball team used to practice in the cafeteria before then).
