Lutwyche City Shopping Centre is a neighbourhood shopping centre located in Lutwyche, which is a suburb 5 km from the city of Brisbane in Queensland, Australia. It is anchored by a Coles supermarket, an Aldi supermarket and more than 40 specialty stores. Other tenants include a TerryWhite Chemmart, an Australia Post outlet, Nextra Newsagency and a BWS bottle shop. A food court with several outlets, including 2 balcony dining tenancies, is also on the main shopping level. The building comprises four levels; the two lower levels are undercover car parking, the third level is retail, which is at street level with Lutwyche Road, and the fourth level is home to a medical precinct and office suites.

Construction is currently underway in the $55 million refurbishment of Lutwyche City with the first stage including a new food court completed in 2018. A third supermarket, Woolworths, will open in the centre in 2019.

History[edit]

Prior to the construction of the centre, the area where it's located contained a number of individual stores facing Lutwyche Road, including a Penney's (later Coles) variety store. This part of Lutwyche Road is considered the main shopping strip for the suburb. Lutwyche Shopping Village as it was known, was built by Ferro Constructions and was opened in late 1974 by then Premier of Queensland, Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen. It was originally anchored by Coles New World supermarket/variety Store and a Barry and Roberts department store. Other notable stores that were at the centre at opening included a branch of local Brisbane menswear store, Rothwell's. Around 1977, Telecom Australia opened a 'Business Centre' and shop at the centre that was there for around a decade.

Some time in the 1980's, the centre was acquired by Leda Property Group who undertook a refurbishment to the centre. The name of the centre was changed by Leda to 'Lutwyche City'. A Franklins Supermarket opened at the centre around the same time Leda bought it, in the space first occupied by Barry and Roberts. In 2001, the centre was purchased by Centro Property Group, the Franklins supermarket closing shortly after due to its parent company winding down its Australian operations. Centro undertook another refurbishment to the centre in 2003, adding an extension for the existing Crazy Clark's discount variety store and a new 'Diner's Life' food court which space for 4 tenants. Another addition was a 'Fresh Life' fresh food mall, containing a new Bi-Lo supermarket to replace the recently closed Franklins was added. Additionally, a general mall reconfiguration and new travelators to replace the ramp down to the parking levels on the southern end occurred as part of this refurbishment. The name of the centre was changed to 'Centro Lutwyche'. It was officially re-opened soon after by then Premier of Queensland, Peter Beattie.

More recently, as part of the current redevelopment, new travelators were installed in the centre, replacing the original escalators, and a new cafe court was opened. The redevelopment will be completed in 2019 by current owners, Abacus Property Group, who purchased the centre in 2015. In September 2019, paid parking, with the first 2 hours free, will be introduced to the centre in an attempt to reduce the use of the centre's car park by commuters who use the nearby Lutwyche bus station.[1]
