Early Years[edit]
Lydia Tett Olet was born and brought up in the heart of the Eastleigh estate, situated to the east of Nairobi. The neighbourhood was a hub of diversity and activity where urban living intertwined with cultural richness. This cultural fusion played a pivotal role in shaping the roles and expectations of society over girls and women within a patriarchal society.
Lydia's father earned a respectable income as per the standards of the time. Regrettably, he was not entirely clear about his familial responsibilities. Consequently, Lydia and her siblings found themselves leading a modest existence reminiscent of poverty. In this context, Lydia's mother, Grace, stepped in to bridge this gap. She ensured the family's survival by selling food to construction laborers and engaging in the lawful trade of various commodities.
From Lydia's perspective, the poverty that she encountered and endured was entirely preventable. She attributed it to her father's misaligned priorities in terms of familial obligations.
