Mailyn Gómez Cruz (born June 3, 1977, Havana, Cuba), better known as Lynn Cruz, is a Cuban actress and writer known for her roles as Bárbara in Larga Distancia (2010), Alina in ¿Eres tú papá? (2018), and Elena in Blue Heart (2021). She is also the protagonist of the documentary Chronicles of the Absurd (2024).
Career
In 2003, she made her acting debut at the National Theatre of Cuba.[1] She worked with various companies, including Teatro El Público,[2] and Pig’s Appeeal in Düsseldorf, Germany.[3]
In 2010, she obtained her first leading role in the film Larga distancia. For her performance as Bárbara, she was nominated for the Adolfo Llauradó and Caricato Awards.[4]
In 2011, she debuted as a playwright and director with El regreso, a free adaptation of La indiana by Catalan author Àngels Aymar. She also founded her independent theater group, Teatro Kairós LCAP, operating outside state institutions.[5]
In 2012, she was cast by director Miguel Coyula to star in Corazón Azul,[6] an experimental film that took ten years to complete.
In 2015, she won the David Suárez Award for Best Actress in Venezuela[7] and at the Cayenne Festival in New York[8][9] for her role as Celia in the Venezuelan film El niño. She was also nominated for Best Actress at the 168 Film Festival in Los Angeles for her role as Roxana in the Ecuadorian film ENDS.[10]
In 2017, she produced and acted in Nadie, a documentary by Miguel Coyula. During its attempted screening at Casa Galería El Círculo, a private space in Havana, the event was interrupted by a police raid and Cuban State Security agents.[11] That same year, her play Los enemigos del pueblo, directed by Miguel Coyula and depicting a mysterious woman who assassinates Fidel Castro in the name of his victims, was presented at the same venue amid another police raid.[12][13]
She has written chronicles, reviews, and opinion articles for digital media including 14ymedio, Havana Times, Hypermedia Magazine, Ediciones Rialta, and Uypress, generating controversy both with the Cuban government and among members of the Cuban diaspora. Due to her political opinions,[14] in April 2018 she was barred from working as an actress within Cuban state institutions.[15] The Department of Advanced Studies at the International Film and Television School of San Antonio de los Baños prevented her from attending the actors' directing workshop led by Norma Angeleri.[16]
Her performance in the film ¿Eres tú papá? was described as "masterful" by the Miami Herald.[17] In 2018, her novel Terminal received a special mention in the Franz Kafka Drawer Novel Award, marking her debut as a novelist.[18] Hypermedia Magazine compared Terminal to Boarding Home by Guillermo Rosales, noting its exploration of human degradation and transgression.
In 2018, she premiered Patriotismo 36-77, featuring non-professional actors who had experienced censorship and police repression. It was staged clandestinely at the Cubanacán National Art Schools without prior rehearsals, defining her group's poetics of presenting work in any available space.[19][20]
In 2020, she received the Impact Documentary Producers Fund and produced the 2024 film Chronicles of the Absurd, directed by Miguel Coyula.[21] In 2021, she premiered Sala-R, supported by the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Havana.[22]
In 2022, she won the Franz Kafka Essay/Testimony Award and published Crónica Azul, a memoir-style account of the clandestine production of Blue Heart.[23][24] That same year, Los enemigos del pueblo (Informe Postmortem) premiered at documenta fifteen in Kassel, Germany.[25]
In 2022, her play SALA-R was published for the first time by Hurón Azul publishing house in Madrid.[26] In 2023, she began writing her new novel Reventar en paz. In 2024, she premiered La Renunciación, an audiovisual work combining theatre, music, and poetry.[27]
